Elk spur tourism boom in Northwest Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In rural Elk County, a mile from the $12 million Elk Country Visitor Center, a small herd of elk munched grass beside a new coffee shop called Elk Life. They were mostly females, known as cows, with a lone young bull nearby that sported two thin antlers called ...

Wyoming wildlife forensic expert reflects on career

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — For 35 years, Dee Dee Hawk was solving unusual mysteries, like whether a captured grizzly bear was guilty of attacking a human. Sometimes using only scraps of evidence, she helped put bad guys behind bars and unraveled wildlife-related whodunits when there were no witnesses. “So many times as a game warden you are on the back end of everything,” said Chad Murphy, a retired Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks regional investigator. “You’re finding what was left behind. Having the ability to utilize a lab and what (Hawk was) able to do was extremely ...

Bison begin migrating out of Yellowstone National Park

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — Bison presence outside of Yellowstone National Park remained low during the last weeks of Montana’s bison hunting season, but the herd’s annual migration and hunter activity recently picked up. Morgan Jacobsen, a spokesperson for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle that on Thursday that wildlife managers have seen some bison make their way out of the park over the last week. Two bison — a bull and a cow — were recently taken by tribal hunters, he said. In the last week, park officials have observed a herd of approximately ...

A few couples strolled the river’s edge as the evening sky blushed to pink. A lone paddleboarder dropped in a fishing line. The summer-sweet air barely moved. Winand had just toured a handful of paddlers around the rocks and historic bridges between the York and Lancaster county banks. Who would have thought the Susquehanna River could be so peaceful and clear a day after Tropical Storm Isaias swept through? This water is his family’s ...

Falconry, an ancient form of hunting, finds new devotees

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The red-tailed hawk sat perched on the twisted limb of an old, dead tree, its eyes locked on the woman traipsing through the briars and thickets below. Wherever Jade Chen went, Candy Corn, the hawk, followed. Sometimes Chen, 33, had to blow a small whistle around her neck to nudge him. “Come on, boy,” she said. Chen wore a thick, leather glove called a gauntlet that extended up her arm, and when she raised it, Candy Corn swooped down through the forest in silence toward her. Little bells on his legs jingled when he landed on her hand. Then he was off ...
