Mount Union, Juniata qualifiers keep season alive

ALTOONA — Six wrestlers from Mount Union and Juniata punched their tickets to the Northwest Regional on Saturday as the District 6 Class 2A Tournament sorted itself out at the Altoona Fieldhouse.
The Trojans advanced four wrestlers, with Rowan McClain-Hartman finishing third at 172 pounds, Andrew Ryan placing third at 215, Kamden Beatty earning fifth place at 121, and Jacik Hess taking sixth at 152. The Indians qualified Ryder Smith, who placed third at 152, and heavyweight Kelton Bonnell, who finished fifth at 285.
McClain-Hartman delivered a steady run through the consolation bracket at 172. He opened the day with an 18-2 technical fall over Bald Eagle Area’s Brody Gardner in 1:29. Later in the round, McClain-Hartman pinned Juniata’s Logan Troyer in 43 seconds. He followed with a 7-1 decision over Huntingdon’s Grady Clark in the consolation semifinals before closing his tournament with a 7-2 decision against River Valley’s Tanner Flickinger in the third-place bout.
Ryan rebounded from a semifinal loss to Huntingdon’s Landon Erdman, who pinned him at 5:31, by putting together two strong consolation wins at 215. Ryan pinned Penns Valley’s Robert Martin in 4:22 in the consolation semifinals, then finished his weekend by pinning United’s Max McConville in 1:50 to secure third place.
Beatty battled through a deep 121-pound bracket and stayed alive with multiple bonus-point wins. He opened with a 17-2 technical fall over Westmont Hilltop’s Pierce Polacek in 3:00, then followed with a 5-0 decision against Bald Eagle Area’s Liam Corey. Beatty dropped a 7-3 decision to Central’s Carsen Mowery in the consolation semifinals but responded with a 10-0 major decision over Penn Cambria’s Layton Munyon in the fifth-place bout.
Hess advanced at 152 after stringing together two technical falls in the consolations. He first earned a 15-0 technical fall against Central Cambria’s Brayden Lutz in 3:18, then followed with a 17-2 technical fall over Southern Huntingdon’s Aaden Cromwell in 3:52. Hess was pinned by Huntingdon’s Luke Mykut in 1:50 in the consolation semifinals and fell 3-2 to Penns Valley’s Sawyer Fetterolf in the fifth-place match to finish sixth.
For Juniata, Smith rebounded from a semifinal setback to finish third at 152. Smith lost by technical fall to Bishop McCort’s Jackson Butler, 22-4 at 4:40, in the championship semifinals. He responded by pinning Fetterolf in 1:16 during the consolation semifinals and then earned a 5-3 decision over Mykut in the third-place bout.
Bonnell navigated a demanding heavyweight bracket to finish fifth. He opened with a 1:54 pin of Juniata Valley’s Matthew Dick and later added a 20-2 technical fall over Marion Center’s Carter Knox in 3:21. Bonnell fell 4-0 to Central’s Blair Miller in the consolation semifinals but closed his tournament with a 2:48 pin of River Valley’s Michael Wano in the fifth-place match.
Juniata also had wrestlers compete through the consolation rounds before being eliminated. Ty Fahnestock finished seventh at 145 after opening with an 11-1 major decision over Penns Valley’s Isaac Harpster, then dropping a pin to Glendale’s Ethan Gilbey before closing his tournament with a 4-3 decision against Forest Hills’ Johnathan Johnson.
Logan Troyer battled through the 172-pound bracket, recording a 10-0 major decision over United’s Aiden Overly before falling to McClain-Hartman and Westmont Hilltop’s Amari Myers by pin.
Mount Union placed 13th in the team standings with 76.5 points, while Juniata finished 14th with 75.5. Bishop McCort ran away with the team title, scoring 321 points, followed by Penns Valley and Bald Eagle Area.
The six qualifiers will return to Altoona in two weeks with regional berths secured and the next step toward Hershey firmly in front of them.
