Shepps hits 1,000 points in consy win

THREE SPRINGS — On a night when Juniata’s offensive achievements got the recognition, it was the Indians’ defense that stole the show.

Juniata’s Jasper Shepps reached a high school milestone with career point No. 1,000 during the Indians’ 54-40 victory over Mount Union in the consolation game of the Southern Huntingdon Tip-Off Tournament.

The two teams struggled out of the gate as Juniata (1-1) led 11-9 after one quarter. Shepps hit a bucket then added two foul shots to account for four of those points. Nick Reed another two buckets and Damien Vance added a three-pointer to tally the rest. Tyler Hooper answered with five and Cai Zon Scott four for the Trojans.

Juniata took a double-digit lead into the lockerroom at the half as Shepps dropped in four buckets for eight points in the second quarter. Brian Kuhn added three buckets as the Indians widened the gap to 26-16. Ethan Huster and Aspen Brumbaugh each had threes for Mount Union (0-2).

Shepps nailed a pair of threes in the third quarter as Juniata used a 16-5 run to push the lead to 42-21. Shepps finished with 12 in the quarter. Reed and Kuhn were the only other scorers.

Shepps finished with a game-high 20 points and Kuhn added 15 as Mount Union rallied with a 19-12 run in the final quarter. Vance added eight for Juniata, while Reed ended the night with six. Hooper led Mount Union with 13 points, while Scott

added 10.

Juniata travels to Newport today, while Mount Union hosts Moshannon Valley today.

INDOOR TRACK

Mifflin County track debuts at F&M

LANCASTER — Mifflin County’s indoor track and field team opened its season at Franklin and Marshall on Saturday, bringing home plenty of top finishes and personal bests.

The Huskies’ Wyatt Kauffman opened the meet on a strong note with a personal-record time of 4:37.44 in the 1,600, while Reese Cubbison followed by winning the 800 in 2:02.26. Carter Smith finished the series with his first place in the 3,000, running a personal-record time of 8:51.18.

On the girls side, Addie Ross took fourth place in pole vault, with a huge personal record vault of 10-0, and Ava Kratzer ran a great race in the 800, placing ninth with a time of 2:38.75.

“Many of the returning athletes have already improved upon their season opener performance from last year, making this meet a success for the team,” Huskies coach Tamara Sechler said.

Mifflin County travels to Dickinson College on Dec. 20.

Midd-West faces

Shikellamy in opener

MIDDLEBURG – The Midd-West bowling team faced Shikellamy to open their regular season on Saturday. On the boys side, Midd-West took 3 of 5 points shooting 2,984 for 3 regular games and 347 for 2 baker games for a grand total of 3,331. Westin Kuhns led the Mustangs with a series of 689 and a high game of 267. Some other scores included Carson Hill’s 658 series and 268 game, Caden Stauffer’s 611 series and 232 game and Coltyn Bickel’s 588 series and 215 game. On the girls side, Madison Herrold had a 542 series, which included a 201 game.
