Kanagy scores 18 but Huskies fall to Mifflinburg
MIFFLINBURG — Jayda Kanagy scored 18 points and Mackenzie Peachey added 13 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Mifflin County Huskies fell to Mifflinburg 50-47 in a non-conference girls basketball game on Saturday, in Mifflinburg.
Peachey tossed in six points in the opening quarter as Mifflin County trailed early, 19-14. Ciara Williams added a three-pointer for the Huskies. For Mifflinburg, the Wildcat freshmen did most of the damage as Mia Reibsane scored eight of her 13 points in the frame. Avery Reibsane was right behind her with five of her 12 points. Parice Shuck, a sophomore, added six points.
In the second quarter, the visiting Huskies rallied by outscoring Mifflinburg, 11-9. Kanagy hit for two and a trey – plus added a pair of foul shots – to finish with seven points in the frame. Payton Weaver also drained a three for the Huskies. Mifflin County trailed 28-25 at the break.
The Huskies went back to Kanagy in the third as she scored seven points, with a pair of deuces and a trey. Lily Curry also had a three, while Peachey and Leah Reed each had two foul shots to account for the rest of the Husky scoring. Mifflin County was outscored by a 16-14 margin by the Wildcats, who pushed the lead to 44-39.
In the final stanza, the Husky defense clamp down, holding Mifflinburg to a mere six points. Mia and Avery Reibsane each had a bucket and a free throw to account for that offense.
Mifflin County outscored the Wildcats 8-6 as Kanagy and Peachey each scored four points to keep the Huskies in the ballgame. Kanagy had a deuce and two foul shots, while Peachey knocked down a three and a shot from the charity stripe.
Mifflin County’s JVs won 35-21 as Gracie Kerstetter scored 10 points and Olivia Bedlyon added nine points.
