Maradiaga and Lopez power Indians past EJ

COCOLAMUS — The Juniata Indians have been atop the Tri-Valley League West for much of the boys soccer season.

And the Indians’ scoring machine — senior Anthony Maradiaga — leads all goal scorers with 16 goals. With the season winding down, Maradiaga and Juniata wanted to make certain both remained in place.

Mission accomplished: Maradiaga and Daniel Lopez each scored a pair of goals and goalkeeper Nolan Imes turned in four saves as the Indians routed East Juniata 4-0 on Saturday night in TVL action.

The outcome was sweeter for Juniata (11-2-1, 8-2-1 TVL) because it came against their county rivals.

After a scoreless first half, Maradiaga converted a feed from Lopez at the 25:30 mark of the second half to give Juniata a 1-0 lead.

At 22:14, Maradiaga struck again, with the assist going to Ricky Guante. A senior, Guante came into the day leading the TVL in assists with seven.

Lopez tallied an unassisted goal at 11:33 to make it a 3-0 game. Lopez, who is also a senior, came into the game ranked fifth in the league among goal scorers with six.

Lopez — with an assist from Maradiaga — booted home the final goal to finish off the Tigers (3-13, 1-9 TVL).

Juniata led 11-3 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks. Imes finished with four saves, while East Juniata’s Kelton Bonnell made six saves.

The Indians host second-place Greenwood today, while East Juniata travels to St. Joe’s.
