MT. UNION — The Mount Union volleyball team cleaned up their regular-season schedule Thursday night in a rescheduled match against Mifflin County, but the Huskies were victorious, 3-1.

The non-league contest was played at Mount Union in front of a large crowd. The Trojans came out and played a good first set against the Huskies but the power up front was a little much for the Trojans with the Huskies hard-swinging rotation.

The Huskies are a hustling team that does not let much hit the floor. The Trojans’ play has been inconsistent with the service line causing them issues all season long. The Huskies came back and ran the table, winning the last three sets. Set scores were 25-27, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.

The Trojans finished the season with a 9-11 record. The Huskies (2-14) play much better than their record displays winning just their second match of the season.

“We just have been inconsistent all season long and just could not get into any type of a rhythm,” commented Trojans head coach Matt Sellers. “Tonight, we played the first set well and then we started to have the errors and could not stay on the service line. Serving has been one of our biggest problems all season. We have improved over last season and have young players that gained experience this season. We are going in the right direction.”

Madison Eichelberger led the Trojans on the service line with six service points that included five aces. Isabella Yocum had 21 digs. Tenly Huffnagle had seven kills and a block. Harper McCormick had five kills along with 13 digs. Lily Hicks had 16 assists and 12 digs.

The Trojans came out and opened an early lead in the first set with the Huskies coming back and knotting the score late. The teams battled point by point with Hicks drilling an ace for the Trojans to win.

In the second set the Huskies gained the momentum swinging away up front and Emily Porch defending the back row. The Huskies opened their lead to three points with Ella Hartzler working hard up front with kills. The Trojans had trouble staying on the service line with the relentless defensive effort by the Huskies. They spread the lead to six points. Down the stretch Porch nailed a couple aces from the service line and Ella Hartzler delivered the winning kill.

The third set started out close until the Huskies again started to hit kills up front and they started to slowly slip away, leading by seven points midway through the set. The Trojans errors and a couple missed serves allowed the Huskies to spread the lead to eight points with Ella Hartzler delivering the winning kill again.

The Huskies closed out the match in the fourth set. The Trojans struggled with missed serves and again the Huskies took advantage of errors and started to open a lead. They were up by four points at the end of the set. The Trojan made a late run at them but were stopped by errors. Adin Reese made the final kill for the Huskies.

“We lost a lot of close matches this season,” commented Huskies head coach Danielle Napikoski. “We have young players that are going to improve and in the next couple seasons they will accomplish a lot. We will turn it around and I am looking forward to coaching this team in the future.”

Stat leaders for the Huskies were Jamilee Gilbert with 20 assists and Leah Hartzler had five block assists. Ella Hartzler had 14 kills and five blocks, and Kate Hartzler had nine kills. Porch had 18 digs.

The Mifflin County junior varsity won over the Trojans (12-6) in two sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-19.
