REEDSVILLE — Mifflin County boys and girls battled on the cross country course in a tri-meet between Mifflin County, Williamsport and Juniata on Thursday afternoon. Both Williamsport girls and boys were successful in sweeping the meet.

The Huskies beat Juniata, 23-32, on the boys side. However, Williamsport defeated Mifflin County, 21-35. Juniata boys lost to Williamsport, 40-18.

The Millionaires came ready to run as they took first and second on the boys side. It wouldn’t be until Zayden Dashen would make a late push with solid effort to get by Peter Fisher to take third place with a time of 17:41. Launder Waldman would take the race by crossing the finish line with a time of 17:21. Mifflin County also got a sixth-place finish from Connor Lynch.

Juniata’s Josiah Barner would place fifth and the Indians’ best finisher, Coy Kerstetter, would place ninth.

Huskies’ boys coach Alex Monroe said, “We wanted to give our varsity runners some rest so it was an opportunity for JV to run up front and Zayden was just awesome out there. And he’s been kind of on that 18 minute mark for so long, he’s been frustrated. And I said, ‘Hey just hang with it. You know you might get that breakthrough.’ And he got that today and hopefully one more, obviously next week. But they were strong all around today.”

On the girls side, Williamsport’s Isabelle Sanders led early and often, crossing the line first with a time of 18:46 and her sister Madeline Sanders was right behind her as they finished 19:10. Juniata would then take the next two spots with Carolyn Heidenreich and Sylvia Brubaker grabbing third and fourth.

Mifflin County grinded it out as Amilia Coffey and Liberty Cook took seventh and eighth place. Abigail Anderson also had a 5k best personal record and supporting time of 22:19.

Lady Huskies head coach Neil Breneman said, “So what we saw today is all the girls running together in pairs. So, Mia was helping to push Liberty along. Abby was pushing Lizzie along. Lizzie had a PR, phenomenal PR and I think Abby might have actually had herself PR as well so we had numerous personal bests today. I didn’t expect that necessarily at a meet. That’s after school at the end of the day so I think it sets them up for what we want to see and expect to see.”

MC girls lost to Williamsport, 18-38. They also faced Juniata and lost a close meet, 26-29. Juniata girls lost to Williamsport, 35-22.

The District 6 cross country meet is next Saturday in Reedsville.

Starting at $2.99/week.
