LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County girls soccer clashed with Waynesboro for a late afternoon matchup with the Lady Huskies looking to sweep the season series after taking game one earlier in the season, 1-0. And sure enough history would repeat itself as the Huskies got a 1-0 victory again against the visitors, this time in overtime.

Both teams got out to slow starts but Mifflin County (5-11) did have the upper hand when it came to shots, having seven shots on goal as Desi Hershberger accounted for three of those seven shots. She had a great feel as she came close several times.

The Indians only mustered four shots in the first half and were shut down by strong defensive efforts from the Lady Huskies but they did have good looks early on. Waynesboro’s Emma Jones also had her fair share of shots on goal for the Indians but couldn’t come through.

Huskies coach Barrett Knepp said, “It’s definitely nice to get back into the winning sides of things but yeah we didn’t play our best soccer tonight. We were pretty sloppy most of the way through. Towards the end we started putting a little more pressure on. And I felt pretty good about going into overtime there and that we could actually find the back of the net and it was nice to make that last one.”

Mifflin County, as the game grew older, played better and indeed put pressure on the Indians. However, the pressure for both teams would get even greater because two halves would not decide the game.

Mifflin County would have to feel good about their chances after playing good enough to feel like they had the upper hand. And that would hold true as Mifflin County would only need one minute to decide their fate. Mifflin County would strike the net on a Emma Herwig goal to give the Lady Huskies a 1-0 win in front of the home crowd on senior night.

Huskies’ Emma Herwig reflected on what her senior teammates meant to her.

“I hope that they continue to grow as people obviously and players and I mean they’ve had a great season. They have done so much for us, we are going to miss them,” Herwig voiced.

Mifflin County’s Mackenzie Peachey and Lorynn Knepp played their last home game as a member of the girls soccer team.

With the win, the Huskies snapped a six-game losing streak.

Next, Mifflin County travels to Gettysburg on Wednesday.
