Eagles collect first win

HUNTINGDON — Juniata field hockey secured its first win of the 2025 season with a 2-0 shutout over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday evening at Knox Stadium. The Eagles struck early and controlled play throughout, outshooting the Royals by a decisive 15-1 margin.

Juniata wasted little time getting on the board as Mallory Prince opened the scoring in the ninth minute with an unassisted strike.

The Eagles doubled their advantage in the second quarter when Caitlin Steffie capitalized on a scoring chance at the 18:04 mark, giving Juniata a 2-0 cushion heading into halftime.

The Eagles’ back line and midfield kept Eastern Mennonite in check, limiting the Royals to just one shot attempt in the entire contest. Juniata created steady pressure, generating seven penalty corners and keeping the flow of the game tilted in its favor.

Goalkeeper Kara Stringfellow turned aside the only shot she faced to record her first shutout of the season. In total, seven different Eagles registered shots, led by Prince, Steffie, and Kaylyn Nierzwicki, who tallied two each on target.

Juniata continues its homestand on Thursday, Sept. 18, when it hosts Hood at Knox Stadium at 7 p.m.

Albee named Defensive Athlete of Week

SHIPPENSBURG – Shippensburg University redshirt-junior goalie Emma Albee was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

Shippensburg went 3-0 this week against nationally-ranked opponents, posting a double-overtime road win at No. 7 West Chester (3-2), a home victory over No. 5 Assumption (1-0), and a neutral-site victory over No. 2 Saint Anselm (4-0).

Albee made 20 saves over the course of the three matches while yielding just two goals in the second half to the Golden Rams. Her second and third shutouts of the season were the 17th and 18th of her career.

She delivered a 10-save performance in the double-overtime win over WCU – her most saves in a single match in more than a year (dating back to the 2023 PSAC Championship game at ESU). She made six saves in the shutout of Assumption and four saves in the shutout of Saint Anselm. Eight of those 10 saves were recorded in the second half to preserve the shutouts.

This is the fifth PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week award of Albee’s career and the first conference weekly honor for the Raiders this season. She was a three-time PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week in 2024 (Sept. 10, Sept. 24, Oct. 15) and one-time honoree in 2023 (Sept. 26).
