Teenage Timms earns impressive win at Knoxville Nationals

KNOXVILLE, Iowa — It was a record-breaking Saturday night for 18-year-old Ryan Timms at the Knoxville Raceway.

The teenager from Oklahoma City stunned the sprint car world with a dominating performance in the 64th running of the Knoxville Nationals. A performance rarely seen by young drivers at Nationals.

After winning his preliminary feature on Wednesday and earning the most points during qualifying, Timms started on the pole and led all 50 laps unchallenged. Timms, driving the Leibig Motorsports No. 10 has been a regular at Knoxville this season with six wins now. He’s the first Knoxville regular to win it since Doug Wolfgang in 1978.

His Nationals win was worth $195,000. He’s the second-youngest winner of the sprint car racing’s top prize. He turns 19 on Aug. 26. He’s also the second driver to win the first Nationals A-main he started. Both of the other records are held by the legendary Kenny Weld in 1964.

His lead at the half-way point was 4.3 seconds. Even with a few restarts, nobody came close to taking the lead.

Timms was also the Beaver Drill and Tool/MPV Express Jesse Hockett “Mr. Sprint Car” for Southern Iowa Sprintweek, netting a bonus of $10,000. Timms has the Tuscarora 50 on his schedule in September.

Last year’s Tuscarora 50 Champion Rico Abreu earned $85,000 for his runner-up finish. World of Outlaws point leader David Gravel raced from 21st to third earning $45,000. Carson Macedo and Pennsylvania’s Logan Schuchart completed the top five. Corey Day, Gio Scelzi, Garet Williamson, Austin McCarl and Sheldon Haudenschild rounded out the top 10.

Kyle Larson was seeking his third straight and fourth Nationals title, but a blown tire ended his chances late in the race. Larson was not in the top five at the time.

It wasn’t a great Nationals for most of the Pennsylvania drivers. Myerstown’s Brent Marks finished 12th after winning the B-main and starting 17th.

Brock Zearfoss was in a transfer spot in the B-main but got upside-down. Anthony Macri finished sixth and Danny Dietrich finished eighth in the B-main. Chase Dietz and Lucas Wolfe finished at the back of the B-main.

Port Royal point leader Justin Whittall had a nasty crash during the Friday night program. He was transported to a local hospital and later released.
