Rumble kicks off at Port Royal

PORT ROYAL — The “Rumble by the River” for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series kicked off Friday night at Port Royal Speedway.

Over 100 racecars filled the pit area among the three divisions, including 44 in the Lucas Oil series.

Brandon Overton, of Evans, Ga., was fastest in qualifying at 18.414.

“We were alot better in qualifying than last time,” he said. “This is a tricky place. It’s big and fast and it gets slick.”

Daulton Wilson, Ricky Thornton Jr., Jonathan Davenport and Dan Ebert completed the top five in Group A qualifying.

Devon Moran was fastest in Group B at 18.887. Mike Marlar, Brandon Sheppard, Chris Madden and Michael Leach were in the top five.

Thornton Jr won the first heat race and started on the pole of the 40 lap, $10,000 to win feature. Davenport, Sheppard and Marlar won the other heat races. Chris Ferguson won the first B-main.

Lane Snook, Jaxton Garman, Jimmy Jesmer and Brad McGinnis won heat races for the 35 limited late models.

A total of 12 different drivers have Lucas Oil series wins in 16 races at the track, including Kyle Larson in 2020.

Tonight’s “Rumble by the River” finale pays $50,000 to the feature winner.

Meanwhile, the sprint cars were in action at Williams Grove Speedway for the Jack Gunn Memorial.

King’s Royal Champion Anthony Macri was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 16.976. Chase Dietz, Troy Wagaman Jr., Preston Lattomus and Cameron Smith completed the top five.

Danny Dietrich, Smith and Ashton Torgerson won the heat races.
