LEWISTOWN — After winning their first two girls tennis matches of the season, Mifflin County was shut out by State College on Monday afternoon, 5-0.
Mifflin County’s Maddy Clinard and Ava Kelly are coming off two stellar singles performances against Gettysburg and CD East. However, the Lady Huskies couldn’t quite get the job done against a really good State College team.
Lion Joanna Liu found open spots and impressed as she defeated Maddy Clinard in singles play, 6-0, 6-1. State College’s Purvi Narayanan didn’t disappoint with a racket in her hand either, shutting out Ava Kelly in her first set, 6-0, and she took the second set, 6-1.
And Kazie Dingwell bested Marcella McKee, 6-1, in their only set. She led the first set, 1-0, before Dingwell roared back. McKee departed the match early due to an apparent injury.
Mifflin County coach Meredith Schwenk said, “I think the team (Huskies) came into this match with good spirits. We know that State College is a tougher team to play historically, but I think if we focus on our technique and keeping our rallies strong and consistent, we will be much more successful versus Harrisburg Thursday.”
Lions Catherine Ma and Jessica Lee defeated Emmah Miller and Delaynie Newlen, 6-0, 6-1. Audrey Brush and Natalie Labosky swept Huskies Alexis Allen and Gladrielle Leonard in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Next, the Lady Huskies (2-1) host Harrisburg at 4 p.m. Thursday. Then, next Tuesday, MC tennis travels to Norlo Park to play Chambersburg. State is now 2-1.
