Huskies, Indians battle during scrimmage

MIFFLINTOWN — Next time, it will count in the standings. On Saturday, there was still time to tinker and try some new wrinkles.
The Juniata Indians hosted the Mifflin County Huskies for a scrimmage at Dietrick Field in Mifflintown, on Saturday morning.
Juniata is looking to build off last season where the Indians finished 9-4 and advanced to the PIAA Class 2-A Championship quarterfinals. Juniata lost six seniors: Connor Boreman, Wyatt Dysinger, Wyatt Ehrenzeller, Gage Harlon, Jaiver Lopez and Lane Peiper.
On the other side, Mifflin County hopes to improve on a disappointing 4-6 campaign despite losing standout players, including Avery Aurand, Cyrell Green and Dupree Reed. The Huskies put on a good show Friday after Friday under the lights for the home faithful, and now look to move to the new Kish Field at Donald M. Chapman III Stadium.
On Saturday, the Indians got solid good reps out of returning quarterback Jason Condo as he connected on a pass with wideout Jasper Shepps, who is expected to play a major role in Juniata’s receiving game this season.
Condo helped out his own cause, taking the ball in for a score. In the running game, the Indians got good performances from Isaac Ramirez and Ty Rowels. Defensively, Juniata’s Colton Rowels made an excellent play, picking off Husky QB Noah Wolfkiel.
Indians head coach Kurt Condo said the game proved to be a good test for his squad. “It’s nice to get live reps you know going against a larger school like Mifflin County,” he explained “I think there’s a tough group of kids over there. So, it’s a good contest for our kids. We’ve got a lot of kids a lot of different reps, so you know there’s a lot of things that we look for in the first scrimmage. Most of all it’s just competition.
“Moving forward for next week in our first game against Selinsgrove hopefully we got the look that we need from everything to know to come up with a game plan for that,” Condo added.
Mifflin County signalcallers Chase Hartung and Reese Christine split majority of the reps; both showed a variety of good work. The Huskies also used Landon Haigh in a lot of different schemes during the scrimmage.
Other players who made an impact included Joel Beamer and Nevin Farley; and Dodger Weaver showed grit on both sides of the football in the game situational scrimmage.
Weaver set the edge, making a tackle for a loss. Zahir Hill also pitched in for the running game, scoring a touchdown. Also getting reps was Dom Siennick, who played on both sides of the ball. Siennick, who came up with an interception, also grabbed a few catches. He could play a major role if the Huskies defense comes up big this season.
Overall, Huskies head coach Shane Breon was pleased with his team’s effort. “There’s things we need to clean up on both sides of the ball still, but that’s what scrimmages are for. And, you know going against Juniata; they’re always a well-coached team so it’s really a great challenge. You know coming out of the gate, you never know what you have as a team.
“But you know one thing do know is the kids are together and they work hard,” Breon said. “And, you know it’s kind of been a crazy offseason with moving around and different fields and stuff to practice, but his kids brought it today. We need to keep that up, and you know, we’ll be in good shape next week against Central Mountain for the home opener.”
Mifflin County welcomes Central Mountain on Friday for the first game at the new Kish Bank Field at Donald M. Chapman Stadium III, while Juniata hosts Selinsgrove at Dietrick Field.
