Dietz scores big pay with Legends win

PORT ROYAL — Chase Dietz scored the biggest win of his sprint car career Saturday night in the Living Legends Dream Race at Port Royal Speedway.

Dietz, of York, earned $20,000 in the Stehman Motorsports No. 23.

He started on the pole, but settled into second behind Ashton Torgerson for over half of the 30-lap feature.

Following a restart with 12 laps to go, Torgerson went to the bottom entering turn one, while Dietz rolled the middle taking the lead as they raced off turn two. Torgerson, driving the Shark Racing 1A fought back in turns three and four, but it was Dietz leading the lap. They were close again in turns one and two, but it was Dietz securing the top spot for good as he pulled away.

“The way I was able to maneuver at the end of the race is what we’ve been working towards,” Dietz said.

“I got a really good restart and that was my saving grace,” Dietz said. “The restart before that, I didn’t take off well and Ashton got away too far for me to make a move. I was able to stick the middle and run through there and hold him off after that. Very pleased with our performance all night and looking forward to taking this into the rest of the season.”

Barry Camp and former speedway champion Mark Smith were honored as this year’s Living Legends.

“I grateful to be a part of this and honor them with this race,” Dietz said.

King’s Royal Champion Anthony Macri was racing fourth when he slowed to stop on the backstretch with five laps completed.

Torgerson controlled the restart over Dietz and Brock Zearfoss, who charged from the rear of his heat race to a redraw spot after mechanical failure in time trials.

As Dietz pulled away over the final laps, Lance Dewease passed Danny Dietrich and Zearfoss to complete the podium.

Torgerson earned $5,000 for second and Dewease $2,500 for third.

“The late-race move wasn’t smart on my part and that’s the kind of stuff I need to clean up,” Torgerson said. “This car is on rails every time I drive it.”

“We were pretty good,” Dewease said. “When I was racing Justin Whittall, I was in his dirty air, and couldn’t make the corner right and that cost me some time and I think I over-heated the tire.”

Zearfoss ($2,000 prize) and Dietrich ($1,750) completed the top five. Track point leader Justin Whittall finished sixth ($1,500). Brady Bacon, 17th starter Jeff Halligan, Domenic Melair and Ryan Taylor rounded out the top 10. The race paid $1,200 to start.

Torgerson was quickest in time trials with a lap of 15.785. Heat races for the 33 cars went to Dewease, Dietz, Melair and Whittall. Logan Wagner won the B-main.

Gregg Satterlee took advantage of Max Blair’s bad luck to win the 25-lap late model feature. Blair had a comfortable lead over Satterlee, but slowed with eight laps to go. Satterlee, of Indiana, Pa., inherited the lead and led the final laps to record his third Port Royal win of the season over point leader Rick Eckert.

“Max had the car to beat,” Satterlee said. “I felt pretty good keeping up with him in lapped traffic. We had a really good car. Max had a bad break and we were able to capitalize on it.”

Hayes Mattern, Justin Weaver, and Colton Flinner completed the top five. Austin Berry, Gene Knaub, 18th starter Lane Snook, 16th starter Gary Stuhler and Matt Cochran rounded out the top 10.

Mattern was quickest in time trials with a lap of 18.647. Eckert, Blair and Satterlee won heat races for the 26 cars.

RACING ROUNDUP Gettysburg’s Danny Dietrich swept the twin 20’s for the sprint cars Friday night at Selinsgrove Speedway. Jeff Halligan, Justin Whittall, Blane Heimbach and Austin Bishop completed the top five. In the second feature, Mike Walter, Whittall, Kody Lehman and Heimbach completed the top five.

Mike Melair held off Ken Duke Jr. to win the 305 sprint car feature at Selinsgrove. Drew Young, Timmy Bitner and Logan Spahr completed the top five.

Kody Hartlaub scored his first career sprint car win Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway. TJ Stutts, Cameron Smith, Troy Wagaman Jr. and Anthony Macri completed the top five.

Brandon Rahmer won the sprint car feature Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway. JJ Loss, Aaron Bollinger, Smith and Chad Trout completed the top five.

Starting at $2.99/week.
