Blackhawks spoil Indians’ opener, 3-2

MIFFLINTOWN — “Should be a good game. We’ve battled closely with them the last few years.” That’s what Juniata head coach Garrick Paden said prior to the girls soccer match with Susquenita on Wednesday. It’s safe to say the leader of the Indians was spot on.
In their first game of the season, Juniata stuck with Susquenita and even had a two-goal lead in the opening half. However, the visiting Blackhawks would prevail with a 3-2 win.
Mylee Landis posted two goals for the Lady Indians (0-1) by the 23:41 mark in the first half. Thea Beward added two assists.
“Our younger girls that stepped into holes from seniors graduating last year performed well at our scrimmage. Which should put us back where we left off last year, plus another year of experience on returners that should put us a few steps forward,” Paden added when asked about encouraging signs his team showed entering the Blackhawks game.
Susquenita (2-0) would tack on a goal before the intermission. Riley Egresits, Natalynn Farhat and Claire Wechsler each scored for the Blackhawks during the TVL ballgame. Two goals came in the second half.
“Their squad has grown the last few years. The girls have to compete for minutes and you can tell by the way they run hard, defend well and fight hard for every ball,” Paden noted about Susquenita.
Yaa Serwaa recorded three saves in goal for Juniata.
Next, Juniata travels to West Perry for a 9:30 a.m. Saturday tilt.
