MC 14s fall short of World Series berth
MILROY — The Mifflin County All-Stars’ run through the 14-year-old Mid-Atlantic Regionals came to a crashing halt at Armagh Memorial Field in Milroy on Sunday night.
Mifflin County lost in the championship game to Westfield, Northern New Jersey, 15-3, in five innings. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Westfield advances to this year’s Babe Ruth World Series in Hot Springs, Ark., in August.
“I’m proud of the boys,” Mifflin County manager Denny Yetter said. “We had to play four games in two days. The West End game took a lot out of us. That’s a big game because we are rivals within the state.”
“We were flat,” Yetter added. “Westfield is a good hitting aggressive team. We just couldn’t keep up with them.”
Mifflin County had its chance to beat them earlier in the tournament but lost 5-4.
Westfield pounded out 19 hits and scored seven runs in the first inning to take control of the game. The first eight batters got hits. Westfield added four more runs in the second, one in the third and six in the fifth.
The only bright spot for Mifflin County came in the third inning. Mifflin County scored three runs as Caden McClure singled to open the inning. Max Trawitz and River Knepp walked and Cohen Leister smashed a two-run double. Leister scored on a ground out by Chase Krepps.
Mifflin County had only five hits as Leister had two of them. Knepp and Chase Benfer each had singles.
For Yetter, this marked the second time that he has managed a Mifflin County team to a regional runner-up spot. In 2021, his 13-year-old All-Stars were beaten in the regional final by Southern New Jersey, who went on to win the national title. It was similar to this year as in the semifinals Mifflin County had to go 14 innings before getting a win over Northern New Jersey.
Yetter’s All-Star record is now 15-10 and his overall mark is 74-51.
