MC 13s go winless in Jersey

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. — Mifflin County manager Bill Corbin was hoping that his Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars would not get in a 10-run ruled game and be no-hit. The 13-year-olds have struggled throughout the postseason with their hitting.

Mifflin County was 0-2 going into the last two games of pool play in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Wednesday.

What Corbin wanted didn’t come true as Mifflin County lost the last two games by getting 10-run ruled and no-hit.

SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY 7, MIFFLIN COUNTY 1

OLD BRIDGE — Coming into the 2025 tournament trail, Mifflin County had not been no-hit since 1977.

In 1977, the 13-year-olds didn’t get a hit in a state tournament game in Hazleton. That was 969 games ago until the streak was broken on July 4 in Williamsport in a 14-year-old state tournament game (by West End, Williamsport).

Then on July 17 in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Williamsport, West End no-hit Mifflin County for the second time this postseason.

On Thursday (July 24), the 13-year-olds were no-hit by Southern New Jersey (Atlantic Shore, Atlantic City area).

Logan Kallen walked four and only allowed seven base runners.

Mifflin County scored a run in the third inning. Brody Keefe walked, stole second. Crue Kochendefer also walked, but was erased on a fielder’s choice from Levi Anderson. Anderson picked up the RBI as Keefer scored.

“We were not very patient today,” said Corbin. “We hit the ball, but right at somebody. We had a couple three, four pitch innings. We had eight hits against Broomall (the most since the opening game in the state tournament), but Broomall is a very solid team and you need more than eight units and one run. It was a historic two days for the league, but not in the right way.”

Kallen didn’t strike out a batter, but from the third through the sixth inning, he retired eight men in a row. Levi Sharp stopped the streak with a one-out walk in the sixth.

Cam Kiwalczik reached first on an error with two outs in the first inning.

Kaden Peachey started on the mound for Mifflin County, but didn’t make it out of the first inning. Wyatt Foltz finished the first and pitched into the fifth. He only gave up three runs.

Brody Keefer closed out the game and only gave up one run.

Bronn Zook made a great catch in center field in the second inning.

BROOMALL-NEWTOWN 24, MIFFLIN COUNTY 1

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. — Mifflin County knew from the state tournament how good Broomall-Newtown was. Broomall won the state title, but Mifflin County didn’t have to face them.

On Wednesday, Mifflin County had to play the state champions and it wasn’t pretty.

Broomall rolled to a 24-1 win in a game that ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

It turned out to be the worst defeat for a Mifflin County team in the 71-year history of the league.

The worst defeat for a Mifflin County team came in 1988 when Levittown defeated Mifflin County, 22-1, in a 13-year-old state tournament game. Southern California beat Mifflin County, 18-0, in the opening game of the 2002 15-year-old World Series.

The 24 runs are the second-most runs ever scored against a Mifflin County team. The most runs scored against Mifflin County came in 1983 in a 13-year-old Mid-Atlantic regional game when Delaware beat the local All-Stars, 26-13.

In this game, Mifflin County picked up its only run in the third inning. Levi Anderson doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Cam Kiwalczik single.

Broomall scored six runs in the first, four in the third, three in the fourth and 11 in the fifth. Mifflin County used four pitchers and gave up 20 hits and eight walks.

Mifflin County had eight hits. Anderson had three hits and Kiwalczik had two. Sharp, Luke Hale and Ben Link each had one. Hale had a double in the fourth inning.

NOTES – The field was all turf where the regionals were played on… Corbin was given a plaque by the Mid-Atlantic officials for coaching or managing in his 1,400th game (Tuesday against Old Bridge)… This marked the second time that Mifflin County failed to win a game in the regionals as it happened in 2009 in Williamsport, 13-year-olds.

Starting at $2.99/week.
