PORT ROYAL – Devin Hart has been trying for a long time to win the
race honoring his grandfather at Port Royal Speedway.
Hart finally accomplished his goal winning the Butch Renninger
Memorial for the limited late models Saturday night. The Port Royal
driver earned $4,333 for the victory. He runs the No. 33 in honor of
his grandfather.
It was an emotional win for Hart and the entire Renninger Family.
“I can’t believe we just won this thing,” Hart said. “Every year,
everybody tells Trent (Brenneman) and I, it’s just another race, it’s
just another race, and its’ not. You can’t come in here with that
mentality. I’ve tried it. I know Trent’s tried it and he can’t get
past the bad luck in it.”
It was a great weekend for Hart as he won the feature at Hagerstown
(Md.) Speedway Friday night earning his first career track
championship there.
Spike Moore started on the pole with Hart right behind him. Moore
grabbed the lead with Hart taking second.
The leaders were racing in heavy lapped traffic and Hart challenged
Moore for the lead with less than 10 to go. Hart and Moore went back
and forth in heavy traffic fighting for the lead.
“I knew Spike was going to be good,” Hart said. “I don’t know if I got
into him or the lapped car on the frontstretch. We race each other
hard and clean. Everybody in the pit area knows how bad I want to win
this race.”
“We were getting better the longer that run went,” Hart said. “I just
can’t believe we’re here. This is 20th Annual race and the family is
here every year making it happen remembering my Pap. It’s good to have
the whole family here and it finally came together that one of us
could win this.”
“I’ve waited so long to give one of my boys that trophy,” Carol
Renninger said. “It’s unbelievable.”
Hart got under Moore in turns three and four taking the lead with five
to go. A caution slowed the pace one lap later.
He controlled the restart and the final laps scoring his third
speedway win of the season and 10th of his career. Moore settled for
second followed by Shawn Shoemaker, Austin Berry and Casey Steinhoff
completed the top five.
Coleby Frye, Andrew Yoder, Wes Bonebrake, Ryan Zook and Gary Stuhler
rounded out the top 10.
Stuhler set quick time at 19.926. Moore, Hart, Shoemaker and Devin
Weyandt won the heat races. Jaxton Garman won the B-main.
Devin Borden raced from the 10th starting spot to his fifth sprint car
win of the season Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway.
He made up a big deficit and grabbed the lead from Hunter Schuerenberg
with two laps to go. The speedway point leader earned $5,300 for the
win aboard the Shuttlesworth Stehman Racing No. 23.
“I’m the lucky guy that’s behind the wheel of this thing,” Borden
said. “I could see I was reeling him in. I was running super, super
hard. I knew I just had to hit my marks. Luckily, I was able to get by
him
Borden will be a contender for Saturday’s Tuscarora 50.
“I feel better than I ever have,” Borden said. “. I’ve got a really
good racecar and I’m starting to get this place figured out. I think
we have as good of a shot as anyone. It’s a matter of putting a whole
night together.”
It was Schuerenberg’s second start in the famous Zemco No. 1.
“I hate to lose them that way,” he said. “I settled into a pace there
leading. I was trying too hard not to make a mistake and give it away.
I felt like I had a pretty good lead; obviously not. That one’s on me
not getting into three as high as I needed to the last five or six
laps. Didn’t really feel like I needed to, but obviously I did.
All-in-all, happy, and I’m honored to be driving a car that’s so
iconic in sprint car racing.”
Dan Shetler grabbed the early race lead as seventh starter
Schuerenberg quickly raced his way forward. He passed Shetler as they
raced off turn two on lap seven.
Ryan Taylor took second from Shetler with a pass off the second turn.
Schuerenberg began lapping slower cars as Borden cracked the top five
at the half-way point. Steve Buckwalter raced by Shetler as did
Borden with 10 laps to go.
Borden passed Buckwalter for third spot and then a third turn slider
got him into second with seven laps to go. He was nearly 4-seconds
behind the leader.
Running the top, Borden quickly cut into the lead. Borden blasted
under him entering turn three. He smacked the wall, but completed the
pass with two to go. Schuerenberg turned back under him, but Borden
had too much momentum.
Borden picked up his fifth Port Royal win of the season. Schuerenberg,
Buckwalter, Logan Wagner and TJ Stutts completed the top five. Taylor,
Jeff Halligan, Blane Heimbach, Shelter and Dylan Cisney rounded out
the top 10.
Heat races for the 37 sprint cars went to Brian Brown, Devon Borden,
Blane Heimbach and Hunter Schuerenberg. Michael Walter II won the
B-main.
In the 33-lap Butch Renninger Memorial for the late models, Trevor
Feathers led the opening lap over Gregg Satterlee and point leader
Rick Eckert. Satterlee drove by Feathers as they raced down the
frontstretch and completed the second lap as the leader.
Feathers stayed right with the leader as Don Lingo Jr. challenged
Eckert for third and made the pass. Satterlee slowly pulled away from
Feathers. He started lapping slower cars allowing Feathers to close
the gap again. Eckert returned the pass for third spot.
While Feathers kept pressure on Satterlee throughout the remaining
laps, it was Satterlee winning his fifth Renninger Memorial. Including
lap money, earned $8,380.
“This race is a lot of fun,” Satterlee said. “I had a really good
night. You could race all over the track. We struggled all weekend
last week. We made some changes and got the car back to where it
needed to be. I knew he was getting closer. I would catch the lapped
cars and sometimes they were two-wide and it would really, really slow
me down. I would move around enough so I wasn’t killing all my speed.
It worked out. Our car was really good.”
Feathers, Eckert, Tyler Emory and Dan Stone completed the top five.
Lingo, Shaun Jones, Matt Cosner, Dillan Stake, and Gary Stuhler
rounded out the top 10.
Emory set quick time at 18.611 and won the opening heat race. Eckert,
Cosner and Satterlee won the other three heat races. Michael Norris
and Drake Troutman won the B-mains.
