Kirk showed what it means to be a man

Popular culture has two competing narratives about manhood. Charlie Kirk rejected both of them and set an example that young men should follow. The dominant view is that masculinity is toxic. In 2018, the American Psychological Association issued guidelines declaring that “traditional masculinity ideology” limits “males’ psychological development.” It also has negative influences on mental and physical health, APA claimed. Masculinity ideology includes “anti-femininity, achievement, eschewal of the appearance of weakness, and adventure, risk, and violence,” according to ...

Capitalism v. Mamdani: The battle ahead

As Zohran Mamdani rides frontrunner status in the final seven weeks before the mayoral election, he’s moving rapidly to the left. Despite efforts by the business community to build bridges with Mamdani, he is ratcheting up his anti-capitalist rhetoric, equating profit with greed, rolling out plans for massive tax hikes, and refusing to share any information on who might serve in his administration. In an interview with Errol Louis on Sept. 8 at Columbia University, Mamdani laid out his radical two-pronged tax hike plan: “One, by raising the state’s top corporate tax rate ... and ...

Like clockwork, efforts to weaken public notice requirements appear before the state’s legislature routinely. The proposed alternatives often are flawed and often would make a system that has worked for generations weaker, not stronger. Requiring boards and councils that need to be accountable to the public to be accessible to the public is tantamount. The connection between accountability and accessibility means our current model requiring the notices be carried by independent platforms is crucial. Allowing a township to instruct its own staff to post notices on a website owned and ...

Readers' opinions

Serve and praise God in this world To the Editor: All of mankind since the fall of Adam have been born sinners and alienated from God (Ps. 58:3; Isa. 48:8). Because of this depraved state “there is no man just upon earth, that doeth good and sinneth not” (eccl. 7:20). Paul declares in Romans chapter 3, “none righteous, none understand, none seek after God, none do good, not one” (Rom. 3:10-12) and “there is no fear of God before their eyes” Rom. 3:17). Because of the natural state of mankind all deserve condemnation and destruction. But because of the love of God for ...

How we use our tools reflects who we are

We found an interaction on social media last week worth noting. As the Sun-Gazette reported in Tuesday’s edition — and also shared on social media platforms — firefighters rescued a woman from a housefire on Race Street in the early hours of Monday. When the Sun-Gazette shared the news on Facebook, the first comment was from the woman in question, who eloquently thank firefighters, saying “I owe my life to every single one of those responders who so effortlessly put their lives at risk to save me.” The Facebook account for the firefighters’ union local responded that ...

Kirk possessed power of being a converter

Charlie Kirk has been called many things, including an influencer, especially of young people. A better label might be “converter.” The power to speak truth in a way that changes a political mindset is better than influencer. Kirk possessed that power which led to his murder by a 22-year-old man who wanted to rob him of it. Written on one of the shells recovered at the scene was “Hey fascist! Catch!” Among the many videos of Kirk debating students who disagreed with his conservative philosophy and Christian faith was a young man who asked about some of what he called ...
