A tower seems logical at MCL

Turret. Belfry. Fort. Tower. All really good words that mean sort of the same thing. Construction on the Mifflin County Library is moving along at a good pace and during the week of May 4, the crew built a tower. Maybe it’s a turret? When I think of a turret, I think of a round-shaped tower in old-fashioned homes. It’s not really a belfry because aren’t there bells in belfrys? It could be a fort? For example, Mifflin County Library, “the protector of knowledge.” Fort Mifflin County Library. No, that doesn’t really work either. I think “tower” is the best ...

The Port Royal Speedway, ‘The Speed Palace’ holds significance

Our most recent Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event was hosted by the legendary Port Royal Speedway, lovingly known as “The Speed Palace,” along with the Juniata County Fair (The Juniata County Agricultural Society). Nearly 60 chamber members attended and were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at one of our region’s most treasured destinations. Guests enjoyed ...

Gratitude on Memorial Day and every day

Monday is Memorial Day. On this solemn holiday, we often reflect on whether we do enough to commemorate this important day, whether we do enough to honor these heroes’ sacrifices throughout the year and whether we are doing enough to ensure future generations understand how important these observances are and how important this sense of gratitude is. Remember these sacrifices not just on Memorial Day or on Memorial Day weekend, but every day throughout the year. Our armed services have placed hard work and values above all, and on this weekend, we honor those whose values led to ...

Lewistown High School baseball team earned its goose landing

Just the other day, I read in The Sentinel that McVeytown got a new goose in honor of Joseph Trimble Rothrock, the Father of Pennsylvania Forestry. With 2027 on deck, there needs to be another goose landing in McVeytown. Next year will mark the 25th anniversary of the Lewistown High School baseball team winning the AA state championship. The Lewistown baseball championship was the last team title for Mifflin County High School. Why McVeytown? Seven of the nine starters were from McVeytown (The McVeytown Seven). Not only were they from McVeytown, but all seven of the players were of ...
