Biden’s crises give Pennsylvanians little to be grateful for this season

As families across Pennsylvania feel the pinch of rising prices, a supply chain crisis, and a war on energy, celebrating the holiday season has become more difficult than ever. Under Joe Biden’s presidency, Americans are paying the price for Democrats’ inflationary spending and failed policies, making grocery budgets and holiday wish lists even more burdensome for families struggling to make ends meet. This Thanksgiving turned out to be the most expensive ever, thanks to Biden’s “Thanksgiving tax.” Prices for just about every component of the holiday feast skyrocketed, from ...

Traditional Festival of Ice makes its triumphant return

The holidays are a time for embracing tradition. No matter what that means for your family and friends, a visit to the annual Festival of Ice is hopefully part of that holiday tradition in the Juniata River Valley. The Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau is excited for this year’s lineup of returning and new activities, plus the ice sculpture gallery will be lining the sidewalks around Monument Square on Dec. 2-3. Thanks to great community support, there will be 45 one-block ice sculptures and five large ice sculptures. The large ice sculptures will be carved live by DiMartino Ice ...

Kyle Rittenhouse, both right and righteous

In judging the actions of Kyle Rittenhouse, set aside for the moment Wisconsin law under which he was tried, and consider the natural law, the moral law, the higher law written on the human heart. In terms of values demonstrated and the deeds done that night that Rittenhouse shot the three men who attacked him, who was on the righteous side? Consider what Rittenhouse did that night of Aug. 25, 2020, and why. Watching on television the nightly riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a town 20 miles from his home in Antioch, Illinois, that he knew well, Rittenhouse decided to go to Kenosha to ...

Federal court blasts Biden’s anti-work vaccine mandate

Working Americans got good news last Friday. They may not have to worry about getting laid off because of qualms about the COVID-19 vaccine. A federal appeals court suspended the Biden administration’s attempt to mandate the shots at private sector workplaces with 100 or more employees. Under President Joe Biden’s order, which would go into effect Jan. 4, employees who refuse the shots have to submit to weekly testing at their own expense or lose their jobs. Vaccines are not required to collect welfare or food stamps, or to come across the southern border and apply for asylum. ...

What if Leviathan destroys our freedom?

What if the federal government views the Constitution as an obstacle to be avoided? What if many of its most earnest endeavors have been spent finding ways to evade it? What if the dual purposes of the Constitution were and remain the establishment of the federal government and the imposition of restraints upon it? What if the states formed the federal government and not the other way around? What if the states that formed the federal government and the states that joined it contemplated at the time of formation and joining that they can correct it when it exceeds the powers that the ...

Lessons to be learned from the ‘media circus’

I’ve been thinking a lot about the phrase “media circus” lately. I’ve heard it applied to all sorts of crime-related stories I’ve covered during my decades as a reporter. Lately, the expression cropped up during the near wall-to-wall coverage of the Gabby Petito missing person/homicide case. I also heard it applied recently to the widespread reportage on pop star Britney Spears’ fight against her father’s court-sanctioned control over her life. When uttered, those two words — “media circus” — are usually accompanied by a dramatic eye roll and a sarcastic sneer. ...
