Elite athletics take a toll on today’s student-athletes

BY ELLARY SCHRECK MCHS Class of 2024 LEWISTOWN — Sports are an important part of today’s youth. Participation helps children grow physically, emotionally, and mentally and teaches them so many lessons that a typical hobby can’t always provide. Growing up in sports and improving in the sport you’ve fallen in love with can be such an amazing part of maturing, but what happens when those kids get older, get to high school, have longer practices, longer days, take it more seriously? How does this commitment affect athletes’ mental health? Athlete burnout has become a more ...

Christ, Messiah and the Messianic Walk

The faith walk of Messianic Believers is not well understood and in that lack of understanding, many assumptions are made. As the leader of Lev Y’shua Messianic Congregation in Belleville, I would like to take a few lines to explain our faith and focus. The term Messianic comes from Messiah which means anointed one. The Messiah we follow is Jesus. His name (Jesus) comes to us from the Greek Iesous. This is how the Greeks translated Yeshua which is the Hebrew Name of our Messiah, and this translates to “God is Salvation.” In essence, the angel Gabriel told Mary that her son ...

How to overcome envy, jealousy

Matthew 20:1-16 Someone or something had torn it to shreds. Marion Webster of Solihull, England, woke up one morning and found her beautiful garden absolutely decimated. Origins of bookmobile in Mifflin County

Last week, I mentioned the fact that the Mifflin County Library had a bookmobile in the late 1940s. It was such a different time and in researching I can see how the need for a bookmobile came about. Before the Mifflin County Library, there were little book “stations” throughout the county, run by the kindness of local business owners and by the love of reading. I compare them to the little free libraries that are growing in popularity today. Sometimes there are a lot of books and sometimes there aren’t. There were stations of books in Milroy in Tressler’s Restaurant and in ...

Old items remind of simpler days

Some time ago I did an article on the things I miss from my early life. There are times when I look at what is going on around me and I think, ‘give me something good, or fun or positive’ — give me back those days! After listening to the political pundits as the national elections are getting revved up, it is obvious they never ended! So this month it is going to be a look back to another time, when things were not what they are today. A time when things were slower. Most know I spent many years reenacting the 18th Century (specifically 1778), but on a broader scale, the time ...
