Winter leaves its mark, but spring eventually arrives

Christmas has come and gone The New Year is in the past Cold icy winds of winter have come But spring will come at last Although the holidays are over, some of the results are still with us. My clothing is a little tighter because of all the cookies, treats and fruitcakes I have eaten. The sharing of these things between neighbors seems to be a tradition here where I live. The wide variety of cookies and the way they are made is amazing. The creativeness of the human mind is just another example of how we are made in God’s image. I am rather choosy when it comes to eating ...

Be like Daniel in 2024 and always

We believers today could learn a great deal from Daniel with the challenges, obstacles and opportunities that we have in our modern society and culture. Daniel was living in Babylon and in a sense we are “living in Babylon” as well. I am using Babylon as a metaphor for culture and society. Daniel with the captivity was literally transported from his Jewish society right smack into the middle of the pagan Babylonian kingdom. The contents of the book of Daniel spans a time period from about 605 B.C. through 539 B.C. Using both narrative and prophetic revelation in Daniel, he ...

A St. Patrick’s Day feast in Bev’s Kitchen

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the kitchen. I don’t have Irish in my background but I’m always excited to try foods from different parts of the world. Did you know that Irish stew is considered to be Ireland’s national dish? And soda bread is their bread of choice. I had to give that a try. The bread was dense but full of flavor. The cake goes well with coffee or tea and the corned beef and cabbage was excellent. ...

Do I have to pay taxes?

What we have in Romans 13:6-7 is the watershed, the benchmark passage on the believer’s relation to government. It is also an unqualified statement to say that every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities, whoever and whatever they may be. Part of that comes down to the practical matter of paying taxes. I know it is sort of a basic human right to complain about paying taxes. Whether you pay a little or a lot, we think it is a privilege to complain about paying taxes. This matter of taxes is before us all the time. Every time you put gas in your car, every time you ...
