Honor, humility and the fear of the Lord
The Bible speaks often about honor. Most people want a life that is meaningful, respected, and blessed. But Scripture teaches that honor does not come through pride or self-promotion. Instead, it comes through humility and reverence toward God.
One verse summarizes this truth beautifully. Proverbs 22:4 says, “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.”
That verse gives us a powerful principle for living. If we want the life God intends for us, it begins with humility and what the Bible calls “the fear of the Lord.”
The fear of the Lord does not mean terror. It means reverence, respect, and recognizing who God truly is. When a person sees God correctly, His holiness, authority and love, it naturally produces humility.
Humility is not weakness. It is the honest recognition that we need God.
Many people approach life believing they can make it on their own. Yet the Bible teaches that all have sinned and fall short of God’s standard. No one has lived perfectly. That is why God sent His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus lived the one perfect life none of us could live. He died on a cross to bear the penalty of sin, He rose again to bring forgiveness and new life to all those who believe. Salvation is not something we earn by our own goodness. It is a gift received through faith in Jesus Christ.
When a person recognizes this, humility begins to grow. Instead of saying, “I can handle life on my own,” humility says, “Lord, I need you.”
The Bible also tells us that humility positions us for God’s help. James 4:6 tells us that “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” When we humble ourselves before God, His grace can begin to work in our lives.
This principle is seen in the life of Jesus Himself.
The New Testament says that Christ “made himself of no reputation” and took the form of a servant. He humbled Himself even to the point of dying on a cross. Because of that humility, God exalted Him and gave Him a name above every name.
Humility comes first. Honor follows.
The same pattern appears throughout Scripture. Pride eventually brings a person low, but humility leads to blessing. Proverbs 15:33 says, “Before honour is humility.”
Humility also changes how we treat others. The Bible teaches us to show honor and respect to those around us. Romans 12:10 encourages believers to be “kindly affectioned one to another… in honour preferring one another.”
In practical terms, that means valuing others, listening, and treating people with dignity. It means recognizing the gifts and callings God has placed in different individuals.
One reason churches exist is to help people grow in this kind of life. Church is not simply a tradition or weekly routine. It is a place where people gather to worship God, hear His Word, and encourage one another.
Many people can point to church services, a revival meeting, or a Sunday School that changed the direction of their lives. When we open our hearts to God’s Word, it has the power to shape us, correct us, and strengthen us.
But it begins with humility.
A proud heart says, “I have everything I need. I know what I need to know.”
A humble heart says, “Lord, teach me.”
Psalm 111:10 tells us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
The starting point for true wisdom is acknowledging God and turning to Him.
The good news is that God welcomes anyone who comes to Him. No matter a person’s past, forgiveness and new life are available through Jesus Christ.
If someone has never taken that step, the invitation is simple: turn to God, trust in Jesus Christ, and receive the salvation He freely offers.
And if you already believe, continue walking in humility before the Lord. Honor God, honor others, and stay connected to a community of faith where you can grow spiritually.
The pathway to honor in God’s kingdom is not pride, it is humility.
Those who come humbly to God will find the very thing the Bible promises: life, blessing and honor.
Friend, If you do not attend church, consider visiting one soon. A good church is a place where ordinary people gather to worship God, learn and encourage one another in life’s journey. Many discover that a single service may open their understanding and strengthen their faith. If you have never put your trust in Christ, God welcomes all who come to Him. All who sincerely seek Him will find Him.
