Red Cross offers options to help editorials
American Red Cross volunteers tend to fly under the radar -and that’s probably the way they like it. But they deserve credit for supporting those who are at their most vulnerable, whenever that need arises.
Here in the Juniata, and across Pennsylvania, volunteers are an especially important part of how the Red Cross gets the job done.
The need is ever-growing. The Red Cross is launching nearly twice as many relief operations in major disasters as it did 10 years ago. That means more volunteers are needed. Among the ways to help are with the Disaster Action Team, Shelter Services and Disaster Health Services. There is also a need for Mental Health Services volunteers.
And it is always an option to help by becoming a volunteer blood and platelet donor.

“National Volunteer Week is a time to honor these community heroes for their constant service and support,” said Erica Mani, chief executive officer of the Red Cross Central Appalachia Region. “They are the true heart of the Red Cross.”
Indeed, those who have found their way through a disaster with the help of Red Cross volunteers have likely already expressed their gratitude. But we are all fortunate to have such generous and capable people willing to serve in times of crisis. As we thank them, we should also consider whether it is time we joined them.
