Sadie E. (Kauffman) Hartzler

Sadie E. (Kauffman) Hartzler, 101, of Belleville, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at Valley View Haven Nursing Home.

She was born on Sept. 24, 1924, in Belleville, to the late Joseph J. and Fannie (Swarey) Kauffman. On May 11, 1947, she married Martin S. Hartzler, who preceded her in death on Aug.24, 2000.

Surviving is a foster daughter-in-law: Darlene Ritz; foster grandchildren: Nathanael and Yolanda; nephews and nieces: Sharon Green, Carolyn French and husband, Gary, James Kanagy and wife, Sharlene, Verda Walters, Irvin Hartzler and wife, Sara, Mary Esther Crider and husband, Glenn, Edith Martin and husband Ron, Darlis Hartzler; great nephews: Timothy Kanagy and wife, Kolby and Tyler Kanagy and wife, Kelly.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death her foster son: Ronald Ritz; sisters: Bertha Kanagy, Malinda R. Sharp, as well as nephews: Millard Hartzler and wife, Arlene, Loren Hartzler, and Fred Walters.

Sadie was primarily a homemaker and also helped her husband on the farm for 20 years. She and her husband hung wallpaper for a number of years in the valley and in Lewistown. Later in life, she was a taxi driver for the Amish.

Her hobbies were sewing blankets, diapers, and infant gowns (layette bundles) for Mennonite Central Committee Relief Fund. She and her husband traveled in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Montana to attend C.P.S. reunions and took in the attractions along the way.

She was a member of the Allensville Mennonite Church, where she participated in the Ladies Sewing Circle.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at Valley View Chapel, 4702 East Main Street, Belleville. There will be a viewing on Friday, April 10, 2026 from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Allensville Mennonite Church, with Pastors Bob Zook and George âBuddyã Baird officiating. Burial will be at the Allensville Mennonite Cemetery.
