A. Marie Werner

A. Marie Werner, 95, of Valley View Haven Nursing Home, Belleville, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025.

She was born on April 4, 1930 in Allensville, to the late Stephen I. and Fannie (Hartzler) Yoder. On March 4, 1955, she married J. Mark Werner, who preceded her in death in 1997. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a step-mother, Fannie (Zook) Yoder, her husband and a sister, Susan Bratton.

Surviving are children, Teena Gehman and husband, Lowell of Green Lane, Steve Werner and wife, Sharon of Belleville, Tracey Werner-Wilson and husband, Ronald of Versailles, Ky., and Henry Werner and wife, Kristina of Mt. Joy; 19 grand children, 20 great- grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Bratton of McVeytown.

Born and raised in Belleville, Marie was a graduating member of the Belleville High School Class of 1948. She met her husband, Mark Werner, at a Brunk tent revival meeting held in the valley. Mark and his friends had driven up from Lancaster County and stayed afterward for fellowship. That evening sparked a relationship that would last for over 40 years. After their marriage, Marie followed Mark to Mount Joy, where they set up housekeeping in his parents’ home before settling in Belleville to raise their family.

Marie dedicated her life to her family as a homemaker. Her home was always immaculate and welcoming. While raising her children, she was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Belleville Mennonite School, always present and involved in their lives and education. After her children were raised, she continued sharing her gifts by providing care for other children in her home.

A lifelong member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, she was involved in her Sunday school class, taught Vacation Bible School, and attended faithfully every Sunday or whenever ‘the church doors were open’.

Marie was known for her hospitality. She loved gathering family and friends for celebrations and holidays. Her children and grandchildren fondly remember her meatloaf dinners, chicken corn soup lunches, and breakfasts of creamed dried beef. Her freezer was always stocked with whoopie pies, moon pies, and ice cream sandwiches, delights that her nieces and nephews never left without.

Camping was one of Marie’s favorite pastimes. She and her family spent weekends at different campgrounds from Memorial Day through October. Summers were spent in Rehoboth Beach, where she relaxed by the ocean every day except Sunday. She arrived early to claim the best parking spot and stayed late to enjoy the afternoon sun–her favorite time of day at the beach.

Marie’s creativity and care extended to her knitting needles. She crafted over 22 colorful afghans, ensuring each of her children and grandchildren had a piece of her warmth to wrap themselves.

Marie also had a deep love for her dogs, who were faithful companions and brought her great joy throughout the years.

Marie will be missed but never forgotten, as her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the family she cherished.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Valley View Haven Chapel, with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. with Vaughn Kanagy officiating. Burial will be held at the Allensville Mennonite Cemetery.
