Mary Lewis Johnson

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Lewis Johnson, 92, on Sept. 3, 2025, at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg.

She was born on June 2, 1933, in Oliver Township, Mifflin County, to Ira Cochran Lewis and Cora Elizabeth (Allison) Lewis. She had two older brothers, Howard and Paul.

Mary was a secretary and a choir director. She enjoyed music, camping and playing cards. Surviving are three daughters, Marjorie Pipes of Largo, Fla., Connie Clutcher of Palmyra, and the Rev. Vicki Burtson of Homer, N.Y.; four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

Mary graduated in 1951 from McVeytown High School and started attending Bloomsburg State Teachers College that fall with a business emphasis. While in college, she met and then married Thomas J. Johnson on Aug. 29, 1953.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Selinsgrove, where she served as secretary and choir director for many years. Mary also worked at Susquehanna University in a variety of secretarial positions during the 1960s through the 1980s, mainly as the Music Department Secretary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and husband.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 300 Roads Ave., Selinsgrove, with Rev. David Dearing and Rev. David Norris officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. in the church.

Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
