Fred Walter Parnell

Fred Walter Parnell, 75, passed away peacefully Monday Sept. 8, 2025 at Brookline Manor.

Born Sept. 14, 1950, he was the son of the late Ross F. Parnell and Ruth A. Parnell.

In 1968, he graduated from Juniata Joint High School and in 1974 from Shippensburg University with a degree in Political Science.

For 27 years, Fred worked at PHEAA. He spent 20 years as assistant bowling manager in Mifflintown and coached girls softball, helping lead the team to the State Championship. Fred was the “eye in the sky” cameraman for 40 years for the Juniata High School football games.

For most of his life his greatest love was sports. He loved the Phillies, Penn State and above all else, Big Red Football. No one knew more about Juniata High School Football then Fred Parnell. Right up to the end of his life, he was a walking encyclopedia of sports knowledge. His other hobbies include: music (he was a DJ in college), trivia, and travel. He loved Alaska and also visited Africa on a safari. He was also a weather aficionado.

Although Fred left no biological family behind, he was far form alone. He shared a deep bond with Jody Witmer, who supported him in countless ways throughout his life. Over a span of more than 30 years, Jody and her family embraced Fred as one of their own, including him in every family gathering and celebration. Fred became a beloved figure in the lives of Jody’s children, Nicole Brixey and Cody Witmer, both of whom he lovingly helped care for as they grew up. His connection only deepened as the family grew extending to Jody’s husband, Carl Thompson, and children Lexi Thompson and Carl Jr. Fred may have had no relatives by blood, but through love, loyalty and time, he became a true member of the Witmer-Thompson family.

Clint Miller and family were also an important part of Fred’s life in the last few years. Clint ran errands and took care of the needs of Fred’s car when he was no longer able to. Fred was grateful for the friendship of Seth Hart, who provided meaningful spiritual guidance throughout his later years. He also shared a special bond with Seth Dowling, who was like a son to him. The three spent memorable times together, including announcing football games on the Juniata County radio station– a shared passion that deepened their connection.

On June 5, 2025, Fred met someone who would change his life completely–Jesus Christ. Though Fred only had a short walk with the Lord here on this earth before his passing, they will walk together for all of eternity. According to Luke 15:7, there was great rejoicing the day Fred Parnell found the Lord.

Those who wish are invited to a Celebration of Life Service on Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Mifflintown with Rev. Samuel Leister officiating. A meal with be held following the service.
