Jane (Metz) Kitting

Jane (Metz) Kitting, died July 3, 2025 in St. Cloud, Fla. She was 98 years old.

Jane was born in Huntingdon, to Claudia and Porter Metz of Belleville. She was the youngest of seven daughters: Grace, Mary, Blanche, Rhoda, Mae, Helen and Jane.

She grew up in Belleville along with her husband, Dr. Robert “Bob” Kitting, although they wouldn’t connect until years later when he was home from serving in World War II.

Her first educational experience was in a one-room schoolhouse near the family farm, in a building that still stands today. Two of her sisters were her teachers. Helen taught home economics and Mae taught Latin and Literature. Jane completed high school in Huntingdon and studied at American University.

She and Bob were married in 1948. Together they lived in several towns in Pennsylvania: Lewistown, Mifflintown, Clearfield and Huntingdon, as well as in Atlanta, Ga., and St. Cloud, Fla. Bob was a podiatrist who had a practice in Lewistown with his brother, Dr. James Kitting. Jane enjoyed managing the office.

Jane had one daughter, Deborah Kitting Sluder; two grandchildren, Addie Hall and Mike Sluder; and four great-grandchildren, Sydney Hall, Matilda Hall, Bennett Sluder, and Grady Sluder.

Jane was active in the community and in the churches where she was a member over the years. She most recently joined St. Cloud Presbyterian Church. Besides her church committees, she volunteered at the church’s second-hand stores and even put on fashion shows with merchandise from the stores. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society, P.E.O., and Junior League.

In addition to volunteer work, Jane kept busy with hobbies and was often found on the golf course with her husband, Bob. She also loved sewing, baking daily pies, and collecting books. She enjoyed antiquing with her sister-in-law, Joan Kitting.

Jane is survived by her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Dr. James Kitting and his wife, Joan. She is survived by nieces, Laurie Toman, Kathryn Jacobs, and Ann Thompson and nephews, George Thompson (Ann), J. William Rumbaugh (Susan) and Rob Rumbaugh (Mary).

Graveside prayers led by Mary Pettigrew, Liturgist, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025, at the Allensville Presbyterian Cemetery, in Allensville, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
