Margareta Eleanora Smith

Margareta Eleanora Smith, 88, affectionately known as Margaret or Oma, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Valley View Rehabilitation Center in Belleville, surrounded by her loving family.
Born July 17, 1936, in Germany, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ida (Roake) Krinke.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer B. Smith; a companion, Bernard Sutusky; and her soul mate Paul Ladjanski.
She is survived by her daughter, Eleanora and husband, Forest and a son, Ricky Smith and wife, Melody, both of Lewistown; grandchildren, Jennifer Whitesel and husband, Gary, of Mifflin, Douglas Zeiders and wife, Morgan, of Montoursville, and Zachary Smith and wife, Danielle, of Lewistown; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Benjamin, Amelia, and Laikyn; and a sister, Arika, of Germany.
Margaret was part of a large blended family and helped to raise her siblings at a young age. She was never one to shy away from boldness. She hitchhiked to Paris and even illegally crossed the Berlin Wall where she was interrogated. She also worked on the railroad before she was legally old enough. These early life experiences shaped her tenacity and courage.
Margaret met her first husband, Elmer, while he was stationed in Germany. After marrying she moved to the United States. She often shared her great accomplishment of teaching herself how to speak, read, and write English.
She dedicated 35 years of hard work to Fishers/Sanyo Electronics. Margaret enjoyed watching Penn State football, going on cruises and spending time with her great-grandchildren.
Margaret will be remembered for her fierce independence, determined spirit, humor, and wisdom. She leaves behind a legacy of strength and tenacity that will not be forgotten.
Per her wishes, no services to be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Margaret’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
