Larry Lee Smith

Larry Lee Smith, 84, of Milroy, passed away at 2:12 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, at William Penn Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewistown.

Born Nov. 14, 1939, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Marie (Kepner) Smith. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his twin brother, Garry Smith.

Larry is survived by: daughter, Hilarie Mohn and husband, Ryan, of Elizabethtown; granddaughters, Ashley and Abby Driesbach; sister, Karen Young and husband, Dennis, of McClure; and sister-in-law, Paula Smith, of Lewistown.

He was a 1957 graduate of Chief Logan High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wheaton College in Illinois. He also attended Penn State University where he pursued graduate work in metallurgy.

In his earlier years, he was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and a member of the vestry. He enjoyed long walks in the woods and the discovery of various flowers and mushrooms. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening and winemaking.

Larry’s career began as a high temperature alloy metallurgist at Standard Steel in Burnham, Pennsylvania. He was a talented science-based entrepreneur that, through his lifetime, had numerous journeys. Locally, Larry worked with Westmoreland Industries in titanium extrusions, at Echo Ultrasound and Johnson and Johnson Ultrasound (now Philips Ultrasound in Reedsville) in the field of medical ultrasonics and became the Director and Administrator of the Mifflin County Industrial Development Corporation for six years during the transition from American Viscose to an MCIDC site, then moved on to Seattle, Washington with Advanced Technology Laboratories.

Larry developed the first in vivo biodegradable ultrasound couplants as part of Sonotech in Bellingham, Washington then went on to pursue his chemistry and winemaking skills by founding Legoe Bay Winery, which he operated for over a decade. This had been his dream.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
