L. Joyce (Hostler) Hack
L. Joyce (Hostler) Hack, 92, of Mexico, passed away at Locust Grove Retirement Village on August 3, 2023, from complications of heart failure.
Born on June 30, 1931, in Beale Township, she was the daughter of the late David and Lillian (Kauffman) Hostler. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her sisters Virginia Hosler, Charlotte Foster, Wilma Yocum, and Betty Brackbill, and four brothers, Homer Hostler, Jack Hostler, Russell Hostler, and Robert Hostler.
On May 5, 1951, she married Robert G. (Bob) Hack, who preceded her in death on May 29, 2015. She worked tirelessly beside him in all his business ventures throughout their 64 year marriage.
She was a devoted mother to her eight children who survive her: Nancy (Tom) Greene, Jersey Shore, Gerald “Butch” (Deb) Hack, Mexico, Gary (Marge) Hack, McAlisterville; Bonnie (Barry) Imes, Port Royal, Brian (Karen) Hack, Mexico, Cynthia Hack, Mexico, Bradley (Marcie) Hack, Port Royal, and Jo Ellen (Vince) Shearer, Montoursville. She was a special MomMom to her surviving grandchildren, Shelley (Bob) Mastrella, Matthew Imes, Justin (Andrea) Imes, Barrett (Amber) Imes, Alison (Colton) Deppen, Mitchell (Robin) Hack, Craig (Ashley) Hack, Katie (George) Frantz, and Gabby and Adam Shearer; 12 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; six step-greatgrandchildren; her beloved sister-in-law Betty Hostler; and several generations of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, husband and siblings, she was preceded in death by a special niece Amy Brackbill; a step-grandson Patrick Bryner; and her best friends Helen Fleisher, Claire Foltz, and Dottie Wilson.
After graduating from Juniata Joint High School in 1950, she devoted most of her life to young children. Prior to her marriage, she was employed as a nurse’s aide at the former Elizabethtown Crippled Children’s Hospital, Elizabethtown, and at Lewistown Hospital, currently Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital. After raising her large family, she was employed for several years by the Juniata County School District as a teacher’s aide at Walker Elementary School. She also babysat for many of her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, who gave her great joy.
One of Joyce’s several passions in life was landscaping her properties. She especially enjoyed mowing the grass, which she did into her late 80’s. She loved creating and tending to her gardens, doing ceramics, taking bus trips to various venues in
Pennsylvania and surrounding states and having breakfast every morning with her best friends.
Joyce was a devout Christian and was a member of the Mexico Presbyterian Church, Mexico, throughout her adult life. She looked forward to attending the Lenten Teas offered each year in the county during Lent.
Joyce will always be remembered for her loyalty to her family, her constant smile, her kindness, her willingness to help others, and her tremendous generosity.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Locust Grove for the care they gave Joyce, and to Candy Hohol for tending to her cosmetology needs, and to our sister, Cindy, for the care she gave her throughout the last several years.
