William Michael Weader

William Michael Weader, MD, 88, died Friday, July 7, 2023, at his home in Selinsgrove.

He was born June 10, 1935, in McClure, a son of William Michael Weader and Kathryn Seal (Fleming) Weader.

Bill graduated from McClure High School in 1953, Penn State University in 1957 and Temple University Medical School in 1961.

He served in the US Air Force in Tacoma, Washington at McCord Air Force Base and worked at Selinsgrove Center, Laurelton Center, Sunbury Community Hospital Emergency Room and in private practice in Selinsgrove with Robert Grubb, MD. He so enjoyed his coworkers throughout the years and loved and respected the nurses and doctors who worked by his side. Some of the doctors who became dear friends were Carl Weller, John Gabala, Larry Gilfert and Ted Hetrick.

Bill loved to travel with his family and made several cross country trips back and forth to the west coast. He was a man who loved a scenic lookout and listening to Neil Diamond, but enjoyed listening to many kinds of music. An avid sports fan, you could often find him watching his beloved Phillies, Eagles, or PSU football games, wrapped up in March Madness or attending a local high school sporting event to see one of his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or great nieces and nephews play. He proudly watched that same group sing and play various instruments in school and church. He played trumpet himself and sang with several groups over the years including the glee club at PSU and the men’s chorus in McClure. In high school, he was a four-letter man playing varsity soccer, basketball and baseball all four years.

Bill served as grill master at his family’s Sunday dinners for many, many years and taught most of us how to grill, how to make a fire and to enjoy sitting around a fire. Many of his sayings will live on for many years through his children, nephews and nieces — things like “I could just spit nickels” and “son of a biscuit”. He was also known for his love of holly at Christmastime he would deliver cuttings from his holly trees to his family, extended family, friends and unsuspecting acquaintances in person or through the mail. Bill loved a good joke and loved to tell his stories — sometimes over and over and over again. We promise to continue to tell his stories and keep him alive by sharing our memories of him.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann (Valunas) Weader; children, Beth Derr and husband Harry, Katrina Michele Myers and husband Craig, William Michael Weader III, Lori Proger and husband Michael, Tami Herrold and husband Dan; and grandchildren, Parker Derr, Hannah and William Weader, Isabel, Carolyn, Katie and Will Proger, Emma and Daniel Herrold. He is also survived by siblings, Joseph Weader, MD and wife Judy, Lois Bruno and husband Pat Bruno, MD; his in-laws, John Grezlak, Tom Valunas and wife Joanne, Barbara Signor, Karen Herrold and husband Jeff, Kathie Doerr, and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father- and mother-in-law, Thomas and Katharine Valunas; sister-in-law, Madelyn Valunas; brothers-in-law, Steve Doerr and Jerry Signor; and nephew, Joel Signor.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 29, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 400 N. Market St., Selinsgrove.

Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
