Carl David ‘Pops’ Byler

Carl David “Pops” Byler, 58, of Arch Rock, Mifflintown, passed away Saturday evening, July 15, 2023, at his home.

Born Aug. 2, 1964, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Irvin Esley Byler Sr. and Gladyse Virginia (Yocum) Byler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Luther Byler.

Carl is survived by: four children, Alyson Rae Byler and companion, Damian Snook, of McClure, Kaleb Esley Byler and wife, Courtney, of Pittsburgh, Aubrey Jaid (Byler) Loht and husband, Seth, of Enola, and Kahly Ilese Byler and husband, Paul Kelly, of Burnham; nine grandchildren, Kooper, Lexi, Tyson, Bronwynn, Arian, Talynn, Elliott, Kai and Andi; sister, Kay Louise Leach, of Mifflintown; and brothers, Irvin Esley Byler Jr. and wife, Lisa, of McClure, and Lawrence Timothy “PeeWee” Byler and wife, Karen, of Arch Rock.

He was a graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Class of 1982.

He enlisted in the Army Reserve and completed basic training at Fort Benning, Ga.

Carl graduated from diesel mechanic school in Harrisburg and worked for various trucking companies. He was employed as a machinist for the former DME, Inc. in Lewistown, from 1989 until 2002, when he moved to Florida. Upon returning to Mifflintown, he enjoyed working with son-in-law, Paul, and his brother, Lawrence “PeeWee”.

Carl was a jack of all trades and enjoyed tinkering and woodworking. He loved fishing, golfing, music, arguing with his grandchildren, and watching weekend Penn State and San Francisco 49ers football games. Carl was an avid racing fan, especially sprint cars, and his favorite drivers were Dale Earnhart Sr. and Kyle Larson.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 North Main Street, Lewistown.

A memorial dinner is being planned on Sunday, July 30, with time and location information to follow on his Facebook page.
