Three important things about God Luke 4:14-30

Do you like surprises? If they’re good ones, they’re ok. However, not all surprises are good ones, at least at first glance. Jesus had an uncanny ability to take people by surprise — and they weren’t always pleased about it. Take, for instance, the surprise Jesus sprung on the Nazarene congregation in his hometown in Nazareth. That Sabbath day, he went to the synagogue, as any observant Jew would. The synagogues of Jesus’ day didn’t usually have paid or appointed preachers and teachers. Any adult male might be called upon to preach or teach on the Sabbath. Can you imagine if ...

Remove the mask

Back in the spring of 2021, after over a year of masking up everywhere we went in public, the masks finally started to come off. In our neck of the woods, most of the mandates were slowly lifted and I can’t say I was disappointed. Now, there are still a few places that require them, but for the most part it is rare to see people masked up. Depending on where you live, masks may still be the norm but obviously there is a strong push to drop the mandates.   My focus in this article is not to delve into the pros and cons of mask wearing. My concern is that for many the masks remain on. ...

Love is patient; love is kind

Since Valentine’s Day is celebrated this month, I thought it would be appropriate to write on the subject of love. One writer said, “If there is anything better than to be loved, it is to love.” I believe that love is the greatest commodity of life. Our text in v.13 says love is the greatest. But what does it mean to love? You can find books written about love, songs and poems about love and enter into discussions about love. But if you haven’t studied I Corinthians 13:4-7 I surmise that you will fall short of love for here is the most complete definition of love ever ...

Historic city churches find new life as neighborhood centers

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The pews were rocking at Holy Trinity on a recent Sunday as worshipers from the Minnesota Swahili Christian Congregation sang and danced beneath the lofty, dark-wood-trimmed ceilings and lively stained-glass windows. Established in the 1920s, the magnificent house of worship once hosted one of the largest Lutheran congregations in the country but has dwindled to just 200 regular Sunday worshippers today. To remain vibrant, the founding congregation has increasingly opened its historic doors to serve a variety of community needs, from the Swahili-language services ...

Dear souls, what would Jesus do?

As I’ve watched the news over recent months and even years, I can’t help but notice all the division among the people of America today. So many issues have recently gotten our attention and caused us to react or respond in one way or another. At times, I feel very certain, myself included, that we have reacted out of heated emotions. Now, maybe we have regret, but should we? While each one has the liberty, yet, of thinking our own thoughts, and believing however we do, shouldn’t we also have the same liberty to express those thoughts? I believe so. There seems to be a stigma ...
