What God ‘gave’ in John 3:16

In our brief study of John 3:16, we now come to the word ‘gave.’ In the English language, the word gave is simply past tense for the word give. The word give can mean: to surrender, to give over, to grant, allow, or permit, to deliver. All of these definitions give a little insight into God the Father giving, or sending His Son into the world. In the original Greek language, the original word had many, many, different meanings. Thayer’s Lexicon list some different meanings under definition 3. Here is one of them: “To give one to someone to care for his interests.” Apparently, ...

God still has a purpose for Satan to serve

Would he come? While he was in England preaching a crusade, Dwight L. Moody was asked to visit a man who’d been paralyzed for years. Entering the man’s house, he expected to find a depressed and gloomy handicap man. Instead, he found him to be vibrant and full of life. After a long visit, Moody asked the man, “Don’t you ever get discouraged, having to lie here like this all day long, week after week?” “Yes,” the man replied, “When the devil comes in, walks over to my bed, and whispers in my ear, Does God really love you, letting you suffer like this? New book presents truisms of Judeo-Christian doctrine

LONGFELLOW — The title could be misleading in passing. A recently-published book, “We Spanked God: Biblical Thoughts,” by Mike Tovar presents one-liners as biblical truisms, followed by a short prose summary of Judeo-Christian doctrine. As for the title, life experiences influenced the author’s choice. “It was a second choice, after realizing the first was too long, and also the subtitle,” Tovar said of the title. “The first [choice] is the first line in my book of one-liners. Back when I was reading the monthly of the Amish-Mennonite congregations, Calvary Messenger, I ...

Cathedral depicts triumph of Christ

“Stand firm, for the future lies with God” Revelation 17-19 There’s a cathedral in Milan. It’s Europe’s third largest. Imagine for a moment, leaving the glare of the Italian sunshine and passing through its great front doors. The first thing you’d see would be fifty-two marbled columns holding up a lofty, octagonal dome, with over 4,400 turrets and pinnacles. Statues of angels rise all about the room. The effect is an incomparable combination of grace and grandeur, beauty, and vastness. Up front behind the altar, like a window opening out of heaven, is one of the ...

Looking at the obedience of Christ

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 – VI In the last article we considered the words “that He.” We looked at one of the reasons the Father was pleased with the Son; He took great delight in the Son because of His obedience. Now we want to look at the obedience of Christ in presenting the word or message of God. He did not change it or rearrange it; He was faithful to the One who sent Him. In the Old Testament, the message (oracle) that was given by the herald, ...
