A final doxology

Many of us grew up singing a doxology. A doxology means a praise saying. So Paul uses a praise saying in Romans 16:25-27. The word of God is filled with many doxologies. It is those times when the writers of scripture contemplate what they wrote and stop and lift their hearts in praise to God. Allow me to give you a good illustration. The book of Psalms is basically a hymn book for the Hebrews. It includes 150 separate psalms which they recited and read and sung. It is divided into five books which speak about the attributes of God. The work of God, the power of God and the wisdom of ...

Let’s share the message of God accurately (without legalism)

Church Growth – XIV This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world. – John 6:14 Jesus Christ (the anointed One) was the fulfillment of Genesis 3:15; He was the fulfillment of that Messianic prophecy. 1 — Jesus came through the kingly line of David, and had a legitimate right to the title, “King of the Jews,” John 19:19. 2 — Jesus came as a priest according to the order of Melchizedek, Psalm 110:4, Hebrews 7:24. 3 — Jesus came as a prophet. Deuteronomy 18:15-18, John 16:14. The religious leaders were not ready for the true Messiah, the One who would ...

Striving ceases when we see Him

Good morning, dear friends. This lovely summer morning, I’m sitting on my porch just watching and listening to the sweet sounds of nature. Birds are especially verbal in the early morning hours. My birds, in particular, swarm around me as they fight for dominance of their feeders. They are “my” hummingbirds. Maybe some enlightenment about these amazing critters is necessary to share with you before we get to the topic at hand this morning. Hummers, as they are affectionately called, really do not hum at all. The sound you may be familiar with is the flapping of their wings, ...

Accountable to God, not man

“So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard’” (Acts 4:18-20). Beginning with the early church and continuing on to the present day, the gospel message has offended and angered multitudes of people. We should not be surprised. The bible tells us that we have a deadly condition known as sin. If no remedy is applied to this condition, we will surely die ...

Considering why religious leaders wanted to kill Jesus

You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. — Psalm 110:4 Last week we looked at the kingly line through which Jesus had come, the bloodline of David. He was known by people as the Son of David. Even today, when people curse, they often use the words, Son of David. This week we want to consider another reason the religious leaders wanted to kill Jesus. Jesus knew the scholars and the religious leaders of His day were well acquainted with the Messianic Psalm 110. When Jesus gave them a question they could not answer, He was referring to Psalm 110, as recorded in ...
