Police kill a burglary suspect in Lancaster after officers say he pointed a gun at them

LANCASTER (AP) — A burglary suspect was shot and killed by police in the city of Lancaster after the officers say he pointed a gun at them while coming out of an unoccupied residence. A police statement said the officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at the home early Sunday shortly after midnight. When they arrived, they say a resident of the home told them the intruder was still inside. Police said the intruder came out of the home and then “confronted officers, and pointed a firearm at them.” They say the officers fired, striking the intruder, who later ...

Officials approve settlement that leveled home, injured 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Public Utility Commission has approved a revised settlement totaling nearly $1 million with a gas utility over a 2019 explosion in western Pennsylvania that reduced a home to rubble and injured five people. Canonsburg-based Columbia Gas took responsibility for the July 2019 blast in North Franklin Township, saying it had failed to install a key piece of equipment in the home while workers nearby upgraded a gas main. Officials said the home lacked a pressure regulator, and when the new system was engaged there was a leak that led to the explosion. The ...

Man bitten on head by bear during attack

DANVILLE (AP) — A Pennsylvania man says he’s paying a lot more attention to his surroundings after a surprise attack by a bear in the garage of his home. John Swartz, 60, and his wife Lori, 59, were watching TV at their home outside Danville on the evening of July 27 when he remembered he had to turn off a hose he’d left running to fill an inflatable pool. So he walked into the two-car garage, where the shutoff valve was located — unaware that a bear had wandered in a minute earlier. The next thing he knew, he said, he was thrown against shelving units, heard a growl and knew ...

Police narrow search for infant lost in flash flood

WASHINGTON CROSSING, Pa. (AP) — Search teams in Pennsylvania were focusing on one underwater area Sunday as they try to find a 9-month-old boy swept away in a flash flood, hours after authorities confirmed that the body of his 2-year-old sister was recovered from the Delaware River. Upper Makefield Township police said in a Facebook post Sunday that although 2-year-old Matilda Sheils had been “brought home to her loving family” after her body was recovered Friday, officials are “devastated that we have not yet been able to reunite Conrad with his sister and ...
