‘Give Back to the Gap’ brings big energy to small act with big impact
BURNHAM — Coopers Gap doesn’t usually need a spotlight. It’s the kind of place people go to escape noise — a stretch of forest where bikers carve through switchbacks, hikers chase quiet and families wander into the kind of stillness you can’t buy. But every so often, even the most beautiful places need a little help staying that way.
That’s where Two Brothers Bicycle Company is stepping in with its second “Give Back to the Gap” cleanup, set for Sunday, April 19, at 1 p.m. It’s not a long-running tradition, not a decades-old civic ritual. It’s something simpler and more honest: a community rolling up its sleeves because the place they love deserves it.
The idea came straight from customers — the people who ride the trails, breathe the mountain air, and know exactly how special Coopers Gap is.
Two years ago, the shop tested the waters with its first cleanup. It wasn’t flashy, but it was real. People showed up. They worked. They laughed. They filled bags. And when it was over, the forest looked better than it had that morning.
This year, the Two Brothers Bicycle Co., which is owned by brothers Nick and Chris Johnston and has stores in Burnham and State College, is bringing the effort back with even more energy.
Volunteers will meet at the Shitaka Trail parking lot before splitting into two groups. Each group will cover roughly 2.5 miles, sweeping a total of four to five miles of roadway and trail. It’s straightforward work — gloves, bags, a little sweat — but it adds up fast. A bottle here, a wrapper there, a windblown scrap of something that doesn’t belong in the woods. By the end, the difference is visible.
Nick Johnston, who oversees the Burnham shop, says the event is about more than trash bags and trail miles. It’s about people taking care of the places that take care of them. And he’s clear about the spirit behind it.
“Let’s team up to keep our favorite outdoor spaces beautiful and litter-free,” Johnston said. “Whether you’re a regular biker, hiker or just want to help out, we’d love to have you there.”
