VFW Auxiliary launches shoe drive to benefit veterans
From staff reports
MOUNT UNION — The VFW Auxiliary to Post 5754 is collecting gently worn, used and new shoes through March 31 as part of a fundraiser to support veterans’ programs.
The shoe drive began Feb. 1 and will continue through the end of March. Donations can be dropped off at Blue Juniata VFW, 14046 Croghan Pike, Mount Union.
Funds raised will support veterans’ causes, including VA hospitals and homes, organizations that provide recreational opportunities for veterans, and suicide awareness groups, according to the auxiliary.
The fundraiser is being conducted in partnership with Funds2Orgs, a company that purchases donated shoes by weight. The auxiliary will receive a check based on the total weight of the shoes collected.
After collection, the shoes will be redistributed through Funds2Orgs’ network of microenterprise partners in developing countries. The organization works with small-business owners who resell the footwear, using proceeds to support their families and communities.
Auxiliary President Lee Moore said the group hopes residents will look through their closets for extra shoes to donate.
“By doing so, we raise money for veteran groups, and we also help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities,” Moore said.
The auxiliary said donated shoes will be given a second life while supporting both local veterans and international small-business owners.
For more information about the drive, residents may contact the VFW Auxiliary to Post 5754.
