Mayall-Marker earns regional spotlight

PITTSBURGH — Juniata High School horn player Selena Mayall-Marker recently stepped into one of the most distinguished musical experiences available to a young performer, representing her school at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Western Region Orchestra Festival.

The festival, held March 5-7 in Pittsburgh, brought top student musicians to North Allegheny Senior High School in Wexford, located in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, for auditions and intensive rehearsals before culminating in a concert at Heinz Hall, home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

For any young musician, Heinz Hall is more than a venue. Its sweeping balconies, warm acoustics and long legacy of world-class performances create an atmosphere that elevates every note.

For Mayall-Marker, it marked a moment where years of practice and quiet determination rose to meet a stage worthy of that effort.

PMEA emphasizes that its festivals are both demanding and transformative. With limited rehearsal time, students are expected to arrive fully prepared and maintain perfect attendance throughout the event.

The organization stresses that participation is a valuable musical and educational experience, and Mayall-Marker embraced those expectations with the same steady commitment she brings to ensembles at Juniata.

Juniata Band Director Brad Eargle said the honor reflects both her musicianship and her character. “We’re super proud of Selena for representing us at Western Region Orchestra.”

Throughout the festival, Mayall-Marker worked under guest conductors, tackled challenging repertoire and collaborated with peers who share her passion for excellence. Her performance at Heinz Hall stands as the culmination of that work, a moment shaped by long rehearsals, high expectations and the thrill of performing on a professional stage.

For Juniata, it is a shining reminder of what its young musicians can achieve. For Mayall-Marker, it is an experience that will echo long after the final chord fades.

Starting at $2.99/week.
