Area wrestlers get mixed results at regionals

Athletes from Mifflin County, Juniata, Mt. Union and Midd-West battled in regional wrestling tournaments this past weekend, leading to mixed results.

Mifflin County scored 26 points and placed 21st in the West 3A Regional at Canon-McMillan. Canon-McMillan placed first with 136 points.

At 114, Andrew “Goo” Alexander pinned Greyson Morris of Albert Gallatin at the 4:56 mark in Round 1 of the championship. The Husky would go on to earn a 4-0 decision over Trinity’s Jackson Hoy in the championship quarterfinals. Then, Alexander notched a 4-1 win over Penn-Trafford’s Dylan Barrett during the championship semifinals. In the championship finals, Alexander lost a major decision to Thomas Jefferson’s Zach Rehak, 10-0.

Also for the Huskies, Jake Knable, at 139, got a 4-0 decision against Erie’s Lincoln Slupski. Knable would lose via pinfall to Thomas Bencho of West Allegheny in the quarterfinals at 3:19. In consolation Round 2, Bellefonte’s Wyatt Long pinned Knable at 2:57.

Husky Brayan Aurand pinned Obama Academy’s Jamair Burton at the 1:48 mark of the 172-pound bout. Thomas Jefferson’s Zachary LaBryer defeated Aurand via tech. fall, 21-6, at 3:34. In the second round of consolation, Kaleb Kinzey of Armstrong got a 4-0 win against Aurand.

In the South West 2A Regional at Altoona High School, Juniata placed 46th with six points in the event.

In the second championship round, Burrell’s Liam Jones got a 5-4 decision versus Juniata’s Ryder Smith during the 152-pound bout. Smith would pin Bedford’s Tyler Barton at 2:35. Then, in the fourth consolation round, Dawson Shaffer of Berlin Brothersvalley earned a 15-1 major decision over Smith.

Juniata’s Kelton Bonnell, at 285, was pinned by David Peters of Greensburg Salem in the second championship round. Bonnell would net a 7-0 win against Knox Dibert of Northern Bedford in the third consolation round. Bonnell would get pinned by Kaden Shannon of Southmoreland at 1:25 in the fourth consolation round.

Mt. Union also competed in the South West 2A tourney and finished in 27th place with 24.5 points. Bishop McCort placed first with 259.5 points. In the first championship round, at 152, Bedford’s Tyler Barton pinned Trojan Jacik Hess at the 24-second mark. Hess would drop his consolation match to Josiah Bosch of Beaver County Christian, 8-0.

In the second championship round, Kamden Beatty recorded a 4-3 decision over Bentworth’s Brock McClure in the 121-pound bout. Beatty lost via pinfall to Keegan Bassett of Bishop McCort at 42 seconds in the quarterfinals. Beatty beat Cameron Eiler of Fort Cherry, 20-3, at the 4:50 mark of the fourth consolation round. Beatty would get pinned by Bruce Anderchak of Quaker Valley in the fifth consolation round at 44 seconds. Beatty would lose to Preston Bubash of Elizabeth Forward in the seventh-place match, 4-2.

At 172, Rowan McClain-Hartman won via tech. fall against Elijah Miller of Greensburg Salem, 19-0, at 2:36. Derry’s Mason Horwat got a 5-1 win against McClain-Hartman in the quarterfinals. McClain-Hartman won by tech. fall versus Laurel’s Domenic Willis, 15-0, at 3:18 during the fourth consolation round. He would also defeat Carter Durst of Brothersvalley in the fifth round, 5-1. In the consolation semis, McClain-Hartman dropped a 1-0 decision to Meyersdale’s Cooper Porter. In the fifth-place bout, Rocco Reifer of Moshannon Valley earned a 5-2 win over McClain-Hartman.

Andrew Ryan, at 215, pinned Adam Baloga of Burgettstown at 2:55. Ryan would lose in the quarters to Noah Layhue, 16-13 SV. Then, in the fourth consolation round, United’s Max McConville got a 9-1 win over Ryan.

In the North East 2A Regional in Williamsport, Midd-West’s Mason Kerstetter won via tech. fall against Kaleb Collae of Benton, 20-4, at 5:09, in the first round at 114. He then dropped a 7-5 decision to Zander Wilson of Williamson in the quarterfinals.

Also in the championship quarterfinals, at 145, Charley Paige pinned Hanover’s Michael Perez at 3:35. At 160, Evan Maneval also pinned Berwick’s Conner Roberts at 2:31.

In the first consolation round, Kerstetter got a 14-0 major decision over Shamokin’s Xavier Carr. In the championship semifinals, Towanda’s Gage Evans notched an 8-7 TB2 win over Paige. Maneval tallied a 7-5 win against Gavin Morcom of Western Wayne, also in the semis.

In the second consolation round, Kerstetter got a tech. fall win over Matthew Shafer of Lackawanna Trail, 15-0, at 4:32. In the semis, Paige had a 6-1 win over Tommy Preston of Canton. Hanover’s Chase Smith posted a 12-2 decision versus Kerstetter in the same round.

For fifth place, Kerstetter pinned Gunnar Faux of Tunkhannock at 33 seconds. Paige claimed third place with a 6-5 decision over Lane Kenamond of Mifflinburg.

Warrior Run’s Reagan Milheim pinned Maneval in the championship final at 51 seconds.

Midd-West placed 10th as a team with 51 points. Line Mountain finished in first place with 109 points.

In girls wrestling at Milton High School, Juniata finished in 31st place with 22 points. Athens would earn gold with 100.5 points, edging Montgomery (100 points).

In the first championship round, at 124, Mykia Petruskevich of Williamsport pinned Juniata’s Rylee Delancey at 51 seconds. At 136, Hazleton’s Miah Molinaro pinned Jordana Steffen of Juniata at 1:12.

In the championship quarterfinals, at 118, Juniata’s Madison Bryner earned an 8-6 win over Athens’ Joyce Clink.

In the second consolation, Taylor Shaheen of Valley View pinned Delancey at 3:14. Steffen won via pinfall against Shikellamy’s Ryleigh Ziants at 2:45.

In the championship semifinals, Bryner recorded a 10-5 decision versus Ariahna Moore of Hughesville.

In the third consolation round, Steffen was pinned by Saleah Shannon of Central Columbia at 2:52. In the championship finals, Lillian Rumsey of Williamsport pinned Bryner at 34 seconds.

The girls state tournament begins on Thursday at 2 p.m. The boys state tourney begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Both events are in Hershey.
