Bridge work pauses, then resumes
PennDOT says flagging will stop briefly before crews begin next phase on Veterans Memorial Bridge
From staff reports
LEWISTOWN — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that traffic flagging on the Veterans Memorial Bridge project will pause within the next week, then resume in late March or early April as crews continue rehabilitation work.
Crews have directed traffic around the clock since early March while replacing the bridge’s first set of bearings. PennDOT expects to complete that phase within the next week.
Once finished, the contractor will stop flagging operations for one to two weeks to reset its jacking system. Crews will then return to replace a second set of bearings, a process expected to take about two weeks.
The work is part of a broader effort to improve ride quality, extend the bridge’s lifespan, and raise its condition rating from fair to good. Most of the work takes place beneath the bridge and is not visible to drivers.
PennDOT said the project should eliminate the need for major work on the structure for 15 to 20 years.
Officials also urged pedestrians to avoid the overhead work area near the Victory Park Mural and reminded drivers to slow down, follow posted speeds, and use caution in the work zone.
The project began in 2025, and crews expanded repairs after encountering more extensive issues than originally expected.
Rylind Construction Company Inc. of Muncy is completing the $5 million contract, which also includes work on three additional bridges in Clinton and Juniata counties.
Drivers can check real-time traffic conditions through the 511PA system online, by phone, or via its mobile app.
