Winter shows its full personality this week

LEWISTOWN — If you’ve been waiting for winter to show its full personality, this is the week. The Juniata River Valley is in for a little bit of everything — bright sunshine, freezing fog, light snow and a weekend cold spell that reminds us February doesn’t play around.

And as the week begins, we’ll also find out whether Punxsutawney Phil spotted his shadow — or not — adding a little folklore to a stretch of weather that already feels like classic February.

“It’s going to be a mix of everything,” said Joe Bauco, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in State College. “There will be moderate temperatures and it will still be cold, but it will be nowhere near as cold as the past week. The temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s and the lows will be in the teens.”

Here’s a seven-day forecast:

Today

The week opens today, when sunshine returns but the air stays sharply cold. Afternoon temperatures climb only into the lower 30s, while the morning begins in the single digits. A steady breeze from the northwest keeps the day feeling crisp, even under a bright sky. High: 30. Low: 8.

Tuesday

Tuesday brings the first round of unsettled weather as light snow moves into the region. Temperatures hover just below freezing during the day before slipping into the lower teens overnight. Visibility may drop at times as snow develops, and the damp, heavy air will make the cold feel more pronounced. High: 32. Low: 14.

Wednesday

By Wednesday, the Juniata River Valley faces one of the trickier weather days of the week. Freezing fog is expected to settle in early, reducing visibility and creating the potential for icy patches on untreated surfaces. Afternoon temperatures struggle to rise out of the 20s, and the night brings another plunge toward zero. With thick humidity and a stubborn gray sky, the day will feel especially raw. High: 30. Low: 9.

Thursday

A brief return to calmer weather arrives on Thursday, though the cold remains firmly in place. Sunshine breaks through, but afternoon temperatures stay in the mid-20s, and the morning begins well below zero. A light southerly breeze offers little relief from the deep chill. High: 26. Low: 10.

Friday

The most active weather of the week arrives on Friday, when a system brings the potential for moderate to heavier snow showers. Afternoon temperatures remain in the 20s before dropping back into the teens overnight. A southeasterly wind may help enhance snowfall rates, especially later in the day. High: 27. Low: 13.

Saturday

The wintry pattern continues into Saturday, which brings mostly cloudy skies and another chance for snow. Temperatures remain locked in the teens during the day and fall toward the single digits at night. A brisk west-northwest wind will push wind chills into dangerous territory. High: 25. Low: 3.

Sunday

The week closes on Sunday, when partly cloudy skies return but the cold refuses to budge. Afternoon temperatures reach only the mid-teens, and the night settles back near the single digits. With only a slight chance of precipitation, the day stays quiet but sharply cold.

After a stretch of snow, fog and bitter lows, the Juniata River Valley will be firmly reminded that February still holds winter’s upper hand. High: 20. Low: 6.
