Visitor’s Bureau releases details on America250 events

From staff reports

LEWISTOWN — Planning is continuing for Mifflin County’s yearlong celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday, with organizers announcing new details on several upcoming events.

The Mifflin County America250PA Committee is working with local groups to coordinate activities tied to the semiquincentennial. The Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau is asking anyone planning an event or project related to the 250th anniversary to submit information for promotion.

Executive Director Jenny Landis said the bureau is approaching the anniversary as it would any major tourism initiative, promoting both new and existing activities to residents and visitors. She added that the office is also available to help community members develop event ideas.

One of the signature events will be the official Mifflin County America 250 Parade, scheduled for July 18 during the Allensville Fireman’s Festival in Allensville. Organizers are encouraging community groups, businesses, nonprofits, churches, families and individuals to begin planning patriotic floats reflecting the nation’s history, heritage and future. Those interested in participating may call (717) 247-6754 or email allensvillevfc25@gmail.com.

Additional details have been released for the “Celebrating America250 Art Show,” planned for this summer at East End Coffee Co. The exhibit will be open to artists of all ages and will feature artwork centered on themes of liberty and freedom. Organizers said entries must be ready to hang and described the show as a nonpolitical tribute highlighting creativity, patriotism and community spirit. More information is available by messaging the event’s Facebook page or emailing jstevens@lewistownseninel.com.

The Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the Star-Spangled Soirée on March 28 at Juniata Valley Winery. The semi-formal event will feature colonial-era reenactors, period music by Forbes Road Frolic and a presentation by historian Tyler Gum on the region’s role in American history. The evening will include a buffet meal, dessert and coffee bar, and dancing. Tickets are $90 and may be purchased at www.jrvchamber.com/starspangledsoiree or by contacting the chamber at info@jrvchamber.com or (717) 248-6713.

The Visitors Bureau is also promoting its “Postcards to the Future” project, inviting residents to write messages, draw pictures or include photos expressing their hopes and memories for the community and the country. The postcards will be sealed in a time capsule to be opened in 2051.

Postcards are available at the Visitors Bureau office, 1 W. Market St., Lewistown. Completed cards must be returned by Dec. 31 to be included.

Updates on America250 events in Mifflin County will be posted at www.jrvvisitors.com and on the America250PA — Mifflin County Facebook page.
