Pokémon fans of all ages invited to meetup at library

MIFFLINTOWN — Calling all trainers, collectors and curious newcomers: the Juniata County Library is once again opening its doors to the world of Pokémon.

The library’s monthly Pokémon Meetup is shifting to a new schedule, with the next gathering set for today, from 5 to 6:45 p.m. in the community room at 498 Jefferson St. in Mifflintown. Beginning this month, the club will meet regularly on the last Monday of each month.

The event is open to every age group, but kids tend to bring the biggest bursts of excitement — often arriving with backpacks full of cards, Switch consoles and stories about their latest catches. Adults and teens jump in just as eagerly, creating a multigenerational mix that feels a bit like walking into a real-life Pokémon Center. Some participants stay for the full session, while others drop in for a quick battle, trade, or chat.

Players are encouraged to bring their Pokémon Trading Card Game decks, whether they’re built around heavy hitters like Charizard and Tyranitar or clever support Pokémon such as Kirlia or Bibarel. Newer fans often show off their favorite cards — sometimes a shiny Pikachu, sometimes a full-art trainer — and older players are quick to offer tips on deck building, energy balance, or how to evolve that stubborn Stage 1 into something powerful.

Video-game fans are just as welcome. Many attendees bring their Nintendo Switch systems to link up for friendly battles, co-op raids or casual exploration in games like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It’s not unusual to hear someone shout, “I finally caught that Garchomp!” or “Who wants to trade for a Sprigatito?” as the room buzzes with activity.

The atmosphere is intentionally relaxed and welcoming. Library staff say the goal is to create a safe, upbeat space where fans can enjoy the hobby together — whether they’re seasoned trainers who know every type matchup or beginners still learning the difference between Water and Fairy types. The mix of ages has become one of the club’s strengths, with older players helping younger ones learn rules, shuffle decks, or understand why weakness and resistance matter.

With its new schedule, growing attendance and come-as-you-are spirit, the Pokémon Meetup has quickly become one of the library’s most joyful community programs.
