State grant to fund Ridge Road improvements

$200K award to support varied repairs in Bratton Township

McVEYTOWN — Bratton Township will soon begin major upgrades to Ridge Road thanks to $200,000 in state funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Local Share Account Program.

Township Secretary Sharina Harshbarger said the funds will be used for road base repair, shoulder maintenance, and pavement improvements along the well-traveled route.

The Local Share Account Program is administered through the state’s Commonwealth Finance Authority to support local infrastructure, public safety, and community projects. Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, who represents the 171st Legislative District, said the program continues to make a meaningful impact in communities across Pennsylvania.

“The statewide LSA grant program is a vital tool for municipalities as they seek to improve or repair infrastructure,” he said. “The grants are very competitive, and the projects that are funded will improve the quality of life for local communities.”

Sen. Judy Ward echoed that sentiment, saying the program helps local governments make long-term, sustainable investments. “This funding will address critical needs, including infrastructure, public safety, and essential services across the district,” Ward said. “The statewide Local Share Account and Act 13 grant programs provide a financially responsible and affordable way for our local governments to make necessary improvements to their community and increase the quality of life.”

Bratton Township supervisors plan to move forward with the project as soon as possible, depending on contracting and the release of funds. Township Supervisor Chairman Stan Collins said securing state support allows the township to maintain roads that otherwise would be difficult to afford on local revenues alone.

“The Supervisors are pleased to be able to access funds for Ridge Road,” Collins said. “Securing the LSA Program funds will allow us to continue to maintain Bratton Township roads at a level simply not possible relying on local tax revenues alone.”

The project is expected to benefit residents, commuters, and emergency services that depend on safe and reliable roadways. Mifflin County Commissioner Rob Postal expressed his appreciation to the township and state leaders for their work to secure the funding.

“School buses, emergency vehicles, travelers, and neighbors alike depend on safe roads,” Postal said. “The cost for improvements shouldn’t just fall upon the local municipality. We’re pleased that the state is partnering with the township to improve local infrastructure.”

The LSA program, created under the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, uses a portion of gaming revenues to support community and economic development projects in local municipalities. Grants are awarded through a competitive process managed by the Commonwealth Finance Authority, which reviews applications from across the state.

For Bratton Township, the Ridge Road improvement project marks a significant investment in maintaining the area’s infrastructure and ensuring the safety of those who travel it daily. Township officials said they’re eager to begin work once contracts are finalized and funding is released, continuing their commitment to keeping local roads in good condition for residents and visitors.
