LEWISTOWN — Central Pennsylvania’s winter music calendar is about to get a welcome jolt of energy as two homegrown acts — the Nittany Wranglers Bluegrass Band and FlipSide with Grace Fala and Rhonda Sweigart — prepare to share the stage for an evening that blends tradition, harmony and the unmistakable joy of live performance.

Though their styles differ, both groups have built loyal followings by leaning into the region’s musical roots while adding their own modern spark.

“Music is an expression of art, and it’s more of a smorgasbord,” Fala said. “It’s nice because that way people can choose what they like. A lot of people prefer a variety of music, so I’m thrilled there are going to be different types there.”

The two bands are the feature artists at today’s Ellen Chapel Live Music Series. The Nittany Wranglers take the stage in the Community Room at 6:30 p.m., followed by FlipSide at 7:45 p.m.

Based in Centre County, The Nittany Wranglers have long been a fixture in the local bluegrass scene, known for their tight picking, warm stage presence and the kind of easy chemistry that only comes from years of playing together.

Their sound is steeped in the classic bluegrass tradition — driving banjo, bright mandolin runs and the rhythmic backbone of guitar and upright bass — but the band has never been content to simply recreate the past.

Their sets often weave together traditional standards, contemporary bluegrass, and original tunes that reflect the landscapes and stories of central Pennsylvania. Audiences respond to the authenticity: the Wranglers play with the relaxed confidence of musicians who genuinely love what they do.

FlipSide, led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Fala, brings a different but complementary energy. Sweigart is originally from Lewistown but now lives in the Camp Hill area.

“It’s worth every spin of the tire,” Fala said of performing for audiences in different places. “We do keep ourselves busy.

“I am enjoying music more and more,” she added. “We feel fortunate we get a lot of callbacks. That’s a good sign. I think it’s our harmonies and song selections (that people like).”

The group blends acoustic folk, Americana, and light pop influences, creating a sound that feels both intimate and polished. Fala’s voice — clear, expressive, and effortlessly warm — anchors the group’s arrangements, while the band’s harmonies and instrumental layers give each song a sense of depth.

Their performances often shift between upbeat, toe-tapping numbers and quieter pieces that highlight Fala’s storytelling instincts. It’s a style that resonates with audiences who appreciate musicianship but also crave emotional connection.

What makes the upcoming performance special is the way these two acts balance one another. The Nittany Wranglers bring the drive and tradition of bluegrass, the kind that gets audiences clapping along before they even realize it.

FlipSide offers a more contemporary acoustic palette, grounded in melody and harmony. Together, they create a program that appeals to longtime bluegrass fans, casual listeners, and anyone who simply enjoys the feeling of live music filling a room.

Both groups also share a commitment to community. The Wranglers have played countless festivals, fundraisers and small-town events, becoming part of the region’s cultural fabric.

FlipSide, meanwhile, has built its reputation through performances at local venues, church events and community gatherings where Fala’s voice and the band’s easy rapport make audiences feel instantly at home. Their willingness to perform for local causes and celebrations has helped them cultivate a following that extends well beyond the stage.

The pairing also highlights the musical diversity thriving in the Juniata Valley. While bluegrass remains a beloved tradition, the region’s musicians continue to expand its boundaries, blending genres and experimenting with new sounds. The Wranglers and FlipSide represent two sides of that evolution — one rooted in the fast-picking heritage of Appalachian music, the other shaped by modern acoustic influences and singer-songwriter sensibilities.

Anticipation continues to build among fans who appreciate the rare chance to hear two distinct local acts in one evening. Whether listeners come for the high-energy drive of bluegrass or the smooth harmonies of contemporary acoustic music, they’ll find a performance that celebrates the richness of the region’s musical talent.
