Little Buffalo to host annual First Day Hike
NEWPORT — Little Buffalo State Park in Newport is inviting residents to start the new year on the right foot — literally — with its annual First Day Hike, a statewide tradition encouraging Pennsylvanians to embrace the outdoors on Jan. 1, 2026.
The event, part of a larger initiative led by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, will take would-be hikers along the Buffalo Ridge Trail, a moderate 1.5-mile route that winds through forested terrain and past remnants of the region’s industrial past, including historic charcoal hearths once used by the former Juniata Iron Furnace.
Hikers will return via the Fisherman’s Trail, bringing the total distance to just over three miles. The trek is designed to be family-friendly, and organizers say all ages — as well as leashed pets — are welcome.
Participants should gather at Pavilion 3 in the Shoaff’s Mill Day Use Area, where the hike will begin late morning. No registration is required, and the event is free to the public.
Park officials recommend that attendees dress for winter conditions and bring water or snacks as needed. While the Buffalo Ridge Trail is considered moderate, the park notes that some sections include rocky footing and elevation changes, making sturdy footwear a smart choice.
First Day Hikes have become a popular New Year’s tradition across Pennsylvania, with dozens of state parks offering guided outings as a way to promote outdoor recreation and healthy habits. For many, the event provides a peaceful, reflective start to the year — and a chance to explore parks that look dramatically different in winter.
At Little Buffalo, the hike also offers a glimpse into the area’s natural and historical landscape, from quiet woodlands to the preserved structures around Shoaff’s Mill.
For those seeking a fresh start, a bit of exercise, or simply a scenic walk to welcome 2026, Little Buffalo State Park’s First Day Hike offers a simple invitation: step outside and begin the year with nature.
Greenwood Furnace State Park, located in Huntingdon, is not offering a First Hike for 2026.
